Job description

SUMMARY: This is a year round position requiring ability and experience in the School Nutrition Program. The Assistant Director of Nutrition is responsible for assisting the School Nutrition Director in the operation of all School Nutrition Program areas in the Lewiston Public Schools District.

SALARY: $24.87/hr-$31.54/hrESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIESOther duties may be assigned.
Support the Nutrition Director in finding efficiencies in the use of labor hours and recommending/implementing changes as need indicates to meet budget standards.
Responsible for the efficient application of kitchen operations and standards recommending/implementing changes as need indicates to meet budget standards.
Support the accurate and timely processing of the Eligibility Application forms for the district and meeting all regulation standards.
Support within the correct time frame the monthly claim form preparation for all School Nutrition individual Programs.
Keep current in and follow all State and Federal policies and regulations in the operation of the school nutrition programs.
Maintain existing safety policies and recommending/implementing changes as needed.
Assist the Nutrition Director in the preparation of district menus to meet all Federal, State and Local meal standards including sourcing new products and costing of recipes.
Assist in the annual preparation of the Nutrition Program budget.
Assist in personnel administration while adhering to all union contracts and all local and state policies.
Assist as needed at the school level for training and daily operations support.
Assist in planning/teaching in-service workshops for school nutrition program personnel.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
In the absence of or at the direction of the Nutrition Director this position will function in a Supervisory role of all Nutrition Staff.
Regularly meet with food service staff onsite and offsite as needed to assist with or review operational challenges and opportunities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent educational experience, with academic major or concentration in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field;
OR
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent educational experience, with any academic major or area of concentration, and a State-recognized certificate for school nutrition directors;
OR
Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and at least 2 years of relevant school nutrition program experience.
OR
Associate’s degree, or equivalent educational experience, with academic major or concentration in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field; and at least 2 years of relevant school nutrition program experience
.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, standard operating procedures, equipment maintenance schedules, equipment instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with individuals and groups of employees. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, yield factors and volume.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to use a Personal Computer with database, Excel spreadsheet, email and word- processing software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies. Ability to work harmoniously with school administrators and staff.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee may occasionally be required to work in a busy kitchen environment and may occasionally be required to lift up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to maintain a valid Maine driver’s license.
