Job Description

Job duties include but are not limited to:

• Make daily resident visits to observe and evaluate resident's physical and emotional status and revise care plan accordingly.

• Facility Clinical System Management and trending/tracking of outcomes

• Interact with medical staff, nursing staff, resident, family members, and other visitors regarding resident condition.

• Ensure that all resident care is provided in a dignified and respectful manner.

• Ensure that all nursing staff are knowledgeable of the residents' rights, and responsibilities.

• Make daily unit rounds to determine unit functioning and evaluate needs and concerns.

• Assist the clinical managers in monitoring completeness and appropriateness OF NURSING staff documentation.

• Assist in emergency situations involving the residents.

• Interact with nursing staff, residents, families and physicians.

• Assist the nursing department in dealing with resident/family concerns promptly.

• Function as a charge nurse if indicated

• Utilize working knowledge of clinical and budgetary compliance in Skilled Nursing environment

• Ensure Resident care-plans contained accurate documentation

• Coordinate efforts to enhance the services provided to the residents i.e. physical therapy, durable medical equipment, etc.

• Assist nursing staff in observing for Significant Changes, documenting and reporting as necessary

• Manage staff of registered/licensed nurses and nursing assistants

• Function as Fall Prevention Officer, which included assessing and evaluating fall incident reports in accordance with Illinois Department of Public Health

• Supervised Nursing staff

• Assist in decreasing falls, psychotropic medication use, and other quality measures

• Manage multiple programs with success including infection control, fall tracking and trending.

• Ensure compliance with state, federal, and standards.

During the instances when the Director of Nursing is absent, the ADON is required to take responsibility for the entire nursing unit under the concerned wing in the healthcare facility. The roles may vary depending on the ownership, size and the organizational structure followed by the healthcare facility. However, the common responsibilities include

• Supervision

They are to take the leadership of the concerned unit. They are required to monitor the staff and ensure that discipline prevails during the work hours. This is done by providing constant feedback to the different staff in the nursing unit stating the necessary changes for improving efficiency and productivity.

• Administration

The nursing departments are entirely responsible for a careful handling of all the records, including the medical history of the patients, different undertaking made in the different nursing departments and documentation of the care plan. The ADON should ensure that all these information are handled with care and may undertake the filing duties.

• Regulations

The ADONs are highly expert individuals in their specific area of health care. Therefore, it is their duty to ensure that both the acute and the long-term care plans are the best for patient care. They should keep a check on both the procedures that are to be followed and the procedures that are to be avoided. They ensure that the system complies with the regulations mainly by conducting patient interviews, making mock surveys, assessing the administrative records and more.
