Job description

The Center for Social Concern fosters a life-long commitment to active citizenship through education, action, and reflection. Originally founded in 1958, under the auspices of the chaplain's office, the Johns Hopkins University Tutorial Project now functions as a program of the University's Center for Social Concern. We are seeking an Assistant Director of K-12 Initiatives who will primarily focus on the development, planning, implementation, and overall management of the Tutorial Project and how Hopkins students further their commitment to active citizenship through community engagement with the K-12 population.

The Tutorial Project is an after-school tutoring program that provides academic support for elementary school students (grades 1-5) on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus. Children are paired with Johns Hopkins University students and receive one-on-one tutoring in reading and math. For nine to ten weeks each semester, approximately 120 children come to the Homewood campus twice a week for tutoring. The children are transported by either the program's bus or by their families. An assessment is given to each child at the beginning of each semester. Based on the results of the assessment, each week trained tutors plan two hour and a half activities and educational games that are specifically selected to meet each child's needs. The children are also encouraged to express their creativity while working with their JHU student tutor. There is an on-site computer lab and children's library available to help provide individualized instruction for each child. Tutors will be trained and supported throughout the academic year by the Assistant Director of K-12 Initiatives and graduate assistant(s) with content area expertise. Additional student staff oversee the progress of each tutor-tutee pair to ensure that they are receiving the support, guidance, and resources that are needed to reach academic success.

Funding for the Tutorial Project is provided by Johns Hopkins University and individual donors and contributors. In addition to the Tutorial Project, the Assistant Director of K-12 Initiatives will work collaboratively with Student Affairs personnel, faculty, and students to develop and implement trainings, resources, and evaluations of Hopkins-led programs and projects providing direct service to K-12 students in Baltimore City. The Assistant Director of K-12 Initiatives will report to an Associate Director at the Center for Social Concern.
