Department Statement:

The Office of International Student Services (OISS) provides services and programs to support Colgate University’s International Students.

Accountabilities:

The Assistant Director of International Student Services reports to the Associate Dean and Director of International Student Services and works to enhance the transition, integration and success of International Students on campus.
The primary responsibilities for this position are to advise International Students on federal immigration regulations, interpret federal regulations, complete immigration forms, and comply with SEVIS reporting requirements.
The Assistant Director interacts with students primarily regarding immigration issues.
Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
  • Issue immigration forms and process applications through SEVIS.
  • Accurately maintain all aspects of International Student immigration records and files.
  • Maintain current and up-to date knowledge of immigration laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Advise F-1 International Students regarding immigration and immigration related issues.
  • Issue visa documents.
  • Coordinate student applications for work authorization.
  • Participate in, and conduct as needed, International Student orientation sessions and other immigration related programming and workshops.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), in accordance with the federal statutory requirements of the Jeanne Clery Act. CSAs are required to and responsible for reporting allegations of crimes they receive from students and employees to the Campus Safety Department.Name:

Demonstrates familiarity with immigration regulations and visa processes in order to assist International Students in maintaining their legal status. Demonstrated knowledge of F-1 visa regulations, SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System), and other relevant immigration policies.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications:
  • Experience with International Student advising.
  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency is required per U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State regulations, to meet the requirements for Designated School Officials.
  • Knowledge of federal immigration and governmental and state agencies’ regulations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills is required. Communicate effectively with a diverse community of people. Ability to communicate with discretion.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines are critically important.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, taking initiative and ability to self-set priorities and juggle competing demands will be necessary in this fast-paced environment. Reliability and resourcefulness.
  • A commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within Colgate’s diverse communities.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • One to three years of work experience in immigration advising and immigration document processing, or experience in an educational setting performing International Student/scholar International Student recruitment or International Student admissions. Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the SEVIS and U.S. immigration regulations pertaining to the F student visa.
  • Cross-cultural or multicultural experience.
Education:

A Bachelor’s degree is required.
A Master’s degree in higher education, international education, or another related field is preferred.
