Assistant Director of Fitness Operations

We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

Cornell Recreational Services offers a wide variety of Fitness, wellness, sports and open recreation activities for Cornell students, staff, faculty, retirees and their spouses/partners. Through our broad-based programs, we try to promote a healthy and holistic lifestyle throughout the campus community.


The Assistant Director for Fitness Operations oversees the day-to-day operations of six fitness centers and two issue rooms within the Recreational Services department. This includes supervision of part time, regular and student staff, managing and directing all scheduling needs in order to operate these facilities in a safe and efficient manner. The role also manages the cleaning and equipment maintenance of all front desk equipment and some site equipment, ensuring that each site has necessary and functioning equipment. As a team leader, this role is essential to the smooth operations of our Recreational Fitness Centers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of two years professional experience beyond a graduate assistantship, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current American Red Cross First-aid, CPR and AED certification.
  • Strong supervisory skills, including the hiring and evaluating of student employees as well as experience supervising a fitness center and equipment issue operations.
  • Experience teaching courses and demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Proficient in Google Suite software (sheets, docs, etc.) MS Office, website update and management and database management programs (FileMaker Pro), and scheduling software.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to gain American Red Cross instructor certification within the first six months of employment.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree, particularly in sports management, physical education, recreation, or leisure services.
  • Certified Personal Trainer, experience working with a large and diverse membership.
  • Experience working in a Campus Recreation department in the collegiate setting.
  • Working knowledge of the WhenToWork employee scheduling program and Rec Trac member management software.
  • Ability to gain American Red Cross instructor certification within the first six months of employment.
