GENERAL SUMMARY

The Assistant Director (AD), IACUC and Regulatory Compliance works under the direct guidance of the Institutional Official (IO) and general guidance of the General Manager (GM). This role is responsible to assist with the management of a variety of processes related to the animal care and use program in accordance with institutional and committee policies, federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and applicable guidance references.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the administrative functions and Regulatory Compliance for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
  • Subject matter expert providing guidance and support to researchers regarding preparation of submissions to the IACUC/IBC and status of protocols.
  • Manages the calendars for IACUC/IBC meetings, site inspections, program review, and AAALAC site visits, lead coordination of meetings and distribution of documents, prepares for site and AAALAC inspections.
  • Responsible for administrative pre-review of all proposed IACUC and IBC submissions, facilitates the veterinary review process, and provides feedback to the PI/SD following the IACUC/IBC process to ensure timely outcomes of submission reviews.
  • Manages the daily activities of the IACUC/IBC including:
    • Distributes and maintains records of IACUC/IBC protocol and amendment submissions.
    • Distributes and maintains records of unexpected/incident reports.
    • Notifies PI/SDs of annual reviews and 3-year protocol renewals.
    • Prepares and sends notifications related to submission status and approvals.
    • Schedules meetings including reserving meeting rooms and ensuring a quorum.
    • Prepares meeting agendas.
    • Ensures availability of meeting materials.
    • Documents committee’s vote for approval, records and prepares minutes, and additional post meeting items (as applicable).
    • Schedules and participates in semi-annual program reviews and inspections. Ensures findings are effectively communicated, properly documented, and followed in accordance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Maintains hard copy and electronic files.
    • Schedules and coordinates IACUC/IBC training.
    • Oversees post approval monitoring (PAM), including the conduct of for-cause and not-for-cause audits, and works.
  • Responsible for USDA 7020, Fish and Wildlife Permits and other regulatory submissions as applicable.
  • Manages annual animal usage counts.
  • Develops reports of animal use related to annual reporting requirements and assurance/license/ registration/accreditation renewal and maintenance from oversight bodies (USDA, PHS/OLAW, AAALAC, and City of local).
  • Coordinates the efforts for continued PHS Assurance, AAALAC accreditation, including maintenance of the applicable documents (e.g. Assurance, program description, etc.).
  • Develops and revises templates, guidelines, SOPs, and policies.
  • Responsible for archiving facility data according to SOP.
  • Provides general administrative support of office (e.g. ordering supplies, full committee meeting support, audit/inspection support).

PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING

  • Functions independently with guidance from Institutional Official (IO), IACUC/IBC Chair, Attending Veterinarian (AV).

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education

Work Experience

  • BS in Science (or equivalent degree) preferred.
  • Certifications preferred: ALAT, LAT, LATG, CPIA
  • >7 years of experience in related laboratory animal science experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Personnel working with animals or animal-derived samples must provide proof of measles (MMR- Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or updated titer prior to initial contact with animals or animal-derived samples.
  • Personnel working with animals or animal-derived samples must provide documented proof of current negative result of TB testing within the past calendar year or be tested prior to initial contact with animals. Annual tuberculosis screening is required of all employees working in the laboratory setting.
  • Personnel must be able to carry out the essential functions of this position with reasonable accommodation if disabled.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Biological safety level (BSL) 1 and 2 laboratory and vivarium settings.
  • Potential exposure to disinfectants, chemicals, biologics, animal dander, and dust.
  • Normal scientific laboratory conditions.

May work with hazardous materials and unpleasant odors.
