Job description

The Division of Cardiology is seeking an Assistant Director, Arrhythmia Center Operations for the Hugh Calkins, Marvin H Weiner, and Jacque J. Bernstein Cardiac Arrhythmia Center. Under the direction of Dr. Hugh Calkins and in collaboration with PIs, this position will provide leadership, oversight and supervision of the Center's operations and research team members. The team includes research coordinators, research nurses, physician assistants, data analysts and research fellows. The Assistant Director will be responsible for identifying, developing, participating in, implementing, and evaluating effective research management strategies, optimizing study recruitment, promoting the research aspects of the Center, and ensuring effective operational and fiscal efficiency of the Center.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the recruitment, training and oversight of clinical research personnel.
  • Assess staff workload and determine assignments in coordination with PIs.
  • Supervise research personnel.
  • Assign clinical research duties to appropriate staff.
  • Optimize research operations by monitoring and improving participant scheduling, research procedures, meetings with study monitors, compliance with IRB requirements, budget management, and invoice preparation and monitoring.
  • Perform research procedures as needed, e.g. phlebotomy, lab processing, ECGs, recruitment and scheduling, administering surveys, administering study medications, etc.
  • Perform clinical research tasks as needed for various research projects.
  • Oversee the utilization of resources, such as space, equipment and items for biospecimen processing and storage.
  • Manage research staff of the Arrhythmia Center and facilitate performance appraisals.
  • Organize and conduct periodic meetings with clinical research personnel to review procedures and challenges.
  • Arrange for outside presentations from Office of Research Administration and other personnel regarding grant and budget preparations, regulatory issues, and other School of Medicine initiatives relevant to cardiology clinical research.
  • Hold periodic meetings with PIs utilizing the shared personnel and resources to review priorities, personnel performance, needs, and suggestions for improvements.
  • Maintain and monitor an up-to-date listing of ongoing research, the PIs, and coordinators/nurses on those projects and the termination dates for the supporting grants and contracts in collaboration with the cardiology grants/contracts team.
  • Manage the needs of investigators who require additional coordinator/nurse support at present or anticipate needing someone in the future.
  • Assist PIs with clinical protocol development, including reviewing and assessing new protocols for clarity, thoroughness, logistical feasibility, maintaining subject safety, etc.
  • Work with research coordinators, inpatient/outpatient nurses, research nurses, research nurse leads, research pharmacy, and other research cores to optimize the practical implementation of clinical research studies.
  • Work closely with other clinical research team leads within the Department of Medicine to help create effective, efficient research systems, and avoid duplication of effort.
  • Work with the clinical research leadership team and cardiology administration to monitor the fiscal status of the Arrhythmia Center research account.
  • Meet regularly with the clinical research faculty leadership with updates on successes and challenges in building the shared resource program.
  • Lead the development of an annual research update for the Hugh Calkins, Marvin Weiner, and Jacqueline Bernstein Arrhythmia Center and bi-annual newsletter to be sent to patients and donors

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in related discipline.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years related experience including significant experience conducting large research projects.
  • Extensive experience with clinical research sciences and regulatory affairs.
  • Extensive experience with protocol and informed consent writing.
  • Prior experience managing clinical research staff.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in related discipline.
  • Cardiology experience preferred.
  • Experience performing ECG Venipuncture.
  • Experience with RedCap.
