Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Four (4) years of full-time experience in academic advising or counseling at the college or university level working with undergraduates. Experience coordinating small and large scale projects, programs, and/or events. Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and/or Google applications. Supervision experience in a higher education setting, may consider supervision of graduate students and/or professional staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling or related discipline. Experience with transfer student advising. Marketing, social media, and/or website experience. Formal assessment experience.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Assistant Director oversees one or more major initiative(s) in the advising unit. The Assistant Director provides individual and group academic advising to students within the assigned unit. The Assistant Director is an active leader and participant in planning activities and events throughout the year, developing and implementing advising strategies for student retention and success, and building connections with faculty, staff, and student constituents. The Assistant Director serves as an ongoing mentor and advisor to Academic Advisors and Lead Academic Advisors. The Assistant Director provides a significant link to students transitioning into and throughout their Stony Brook undergraduate experience. The incumbent plays an important role in various assessment projects throughout the year.
Duties:
  • Advising Services Coordinator:
    • Track advising usage.
    • Assess and analyze the top reasons students seek or do not seek/accept Advising Services.
    • Co-lead Marketing Committee to enhance visibility, communication, and outreach with students, faculty, and collaborators.
    • Determine service gaps in the unit; proposing and creating solutions.
    • Coordinate advising and events calendar to reflect student flow to enhance services.
    • Collaborate with Operations Manager and other staff to hire, train, schedule, and evaluate student assistants.
  • Transfer Student Orientation Co-Coordinator:
    • Lead, oversee, and collaborate on various aspects of transfer student orientations including major department recommendations for incoming transfer students, course evaluation outreach, and back-up for incoming transfer student assignments for registration sessions.
    • Analyze past practices and propose/ implement creative ideas regarding Health Science and Pre-Nursing registration sessions.
  • Academic Advising:
    • Provide high quality, proactive academic advising to undergraduate transfer students and undergraduates in their sophomore, junior, and senior year in order to support academic success, retention, and increased graduation rates.
    • Determine ways to help students thrive throughout their journeys as Stony Brook students. Advising will occur in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis, including new student orientations, and will include regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements, and policies/procedures.
    • Provide active support, follow-up, and strategies for success either individually or in a group setting, to students on academic action. Serve as a general walk-in and/or appointment advisor for undergraduates.
    • Support the training and development of Academic Advisors and Lead Academic Advisors via communicating policy, procedure, curricular, and other relevant knowledge.
    • Participate in various assessment projects including assessment of academic advising.
    • Collaborate on academic standing outreach and analysis.
  • Supervision:
    • Supervise and evaluate professional academic advisors as assigned. Create formalized, ongoing training and professional development opportunities for all advising staff to maintain high standards for academic advising and professional growth. Support the overall advising team in interpreting policies and procedures, resolving complex problems, and providing initial response to "next level" issues or concerns raised by supervisees. Represent the office in the absence of the Associate Director and/or Director.
  • Program Development and Event Planning:
    • Participate in initiating, planning, and developing events and activities which build community and support academic success, retention, and increased graduation rates.
    • Participate in various university programs and services including training/staff development, campus events, special events, admissions open houses, search committees, and University-wide committees.
    • Participate in tracking initiatives such as progress reports and the denied graduation group. Undertake projects making advising more student-focused and innovative.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
