Scope of Job

The Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Pre-Clerkships is a key member of the education leadership team, reporting to the Associate Dean for Educational Affairs. In this role, the Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Pre-Clerkships is responsible for leading curricular activities that reflect the vision, values and mission of the UTRGV SOM. The Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Pre-Clerkships will work closely with the Associate Dean for Educational Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships to structure the horizontal and vertical integration of the overall UME curriculum. Together they will work to promote student success by ensuring that all medical students achieve the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become competent, compassionate physician leaders.

Description of Duties
  • Oversees the daily operations of the pre-clinical curriculum, which includes liaising closely with administrative staff, faculty and leadership.
  • Assists in the design, delivery and management of the UME basic science/ pre-clerkship curriculum.
  • Works closely with faculty and curriculum leadership team to co-create, implement and assess curricular innovations.
  • Oversees all aspects related to the evaluation of the pre-clinical curriculum including student faculty, and resident evaluations.
  • Oversees module development, integration, review and revisions.
  • Facilitates opportunities for module leadership to meet to integrate content.
  • Identify, support, supervise and evaluate module leadership, PBL facilitators, and faculty and instruction.
  • Assists in the supervision of the course coordinators for years 1-2 and ensure software program systems and daily job duties have been met; provide input into annual performance evaluation.
  • Oversees the Pre-Clerkship budget.
  • Continuously appraises the efficacy of the pre-clerkship curriculum in terms of attainment of competencies, appropriateness of sequencing, adequacy of content, pedagogical methods, etc. in order to promote meaningful curricular renewal.
  • Recommends and implements high-impact, evidence-informed curricular changes to restructure components of the current curriculum and respond to concerns or suggestions from students, faculty and staff.
  • Partners with module directors and teaching faculty to implement revisions and updates to the pre-clerkship curriculum.
  • Chairs the CCAC Pre-Clerkship subcommittee and serve on other committees related to the pre-clerkship curriculum.
  • Acts as a point contact person for students, faculty and administrators for all issues related to the basic science/ pre-clerkship curriculum.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, assist in the development and maintenance of postgraduate career planning and advising program for medical students.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, monitor and address academic or disciplinary problems arising with first and second year medical students.
  • Promotes the interests and welfare of the Office of Educational Affairs (faculty, staff, and students).
  • Other duties as assigned.
