Position Summary:
The Assistant Controller is responsible for general accounting functions for college general and plant funds and financial reporting for the college as a whole.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Oversee all general accounting functions such as journal entries, account reconciliations, special reports, and feeds to the general ledger (such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and investments).
• Coordinate financial reporting information for external and internal stakeholders. Lead Argos reporting initiatives for the Finance department.
• Ensure financial accountability and organizational compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and government regulations. Research and implement GASB reporting changes, as required.
• Oversee tracking and special reporting for all College Capital Assets, including monitoring and approving/disapproving related purchase requisitions according to College policies and procedures.
• Perform monthly analysis of the Trial Balance and Revenue and Expense Statements for the general, auxiliary, agency, and plant funds.
• Ensures all financial systems function according to IRS, State of Michigan, banking and finance industry standards and generally accepted practices.
• Oversee financial system security and data integrity.
• Evaluate, develop and implement new system operations and business procedures within the Financial Services area. Evaluate existing business processes and system setup.
• Advise peers and management on Banner system functionality.
• Test and evaluate the results of patches, fixes and system upgrades.
• Other duties as assigned.
Related Duties:
• Oversee the collections of journal entries and supporting documentation for all entries that are recorded in the general ledger.
• Serve on committees which recommend, coordinate, and implement changes and/or improvements in fiscal controls, policies, procedures, and/or financial and human resource management systems.
• Identify and solve Finance software problems. Lead department problem solving during financial system emergencies
• Responsible for monitoring the preparation of all College-prepared work papers in conjunction with the annual audit. Maintain the audit work paper files and prepare the published version of the annual audit.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration AND at least four (4) years full-time successful professional accounting experience OR the equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by College administration.
• Strong oral and written communication skills in order to effectively communicate with staff, administrators, government officials and the general public.
• Strong analytical and technological skills in order to administer financial procedures, policies and systems of the College.
• Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
• Ability to effectively handle difficult situations with appropriate tact, respect, and resourcefulness.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
• Internal or external financial reporting experience, including research into FASB or GASB reporting requirements. CPA.
• Experience with integrated computerized financial systems and Microsoft Excel. Experience with Microsoft Access.
This position is currently authorized for a hybrid work schedule. Positions at the college are subject to review to determine eligibility for hybrid work including presence on campus.
