Please note: This position offers flexible hybrid scheduling requiring some onsite work in the state of Maryland.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Accountant will serve as the primary accountant for the Foundation. The candidate focuses on processes and internal controls, core accounting functions, budgeting, and financial reporting. This team member plays a key role in performing day-to-day accounting operations, including month end close and financial reporting to ensure compliance to Foundation policies and procedures, timeliness, and presentation of financial data. In collaboration with other staff, s/he recommends improvements to processes to best incorporate suitable controls to ensure the integrity of the financial information, to ensure timely and complete accurate program reports, to ensure meaningful presentations of financial data to end-users, and to ensure timely response to requests for ad hoc financial information.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for assisting in the implementation of financial policies and procedures regarding general ledger, financial reporting, state and federal regulations compliance, and grantee compliance.
  • Responsible for maintaining clear and effective financial internal control documentation for the organization.
  • Ability to perform or review all accounting/finance functions/UPI, to include financial statement preparation and analysis, posting or approving all journal entries and journal vouchers, grant account setup and payments as needed, reconciliation of invoices and posting for payment, safeguarding and accounting for petty cash, receipts, accounts payable and receivable, documentation, general ledger analysis, designated fund tracking, bank reconciliations, allocations, indirect cost rate calculations, issuing 1099s, budget development/analysis etc.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly IS and BS reports for CFO review/approval
  • Prepare annual state charitable registrations as needed
  • Perform business critical banking functions as needed
  • Provide adhoc financial reports to leadership, CFO and business managers as needed
  • Meet with CFO weekly to review any receivables that need to be transferred to investment company for appropriate investment
  • Collaborate with Sr. Gift Processor on workload/processing of monthly invoices and ACH payments
  • Collaborate with Sr. Gift Processor to ensure all top level reports are generated and sent to UB Business manager timely after ME is complete
  • Work collaboratively with other team members and other departments to ensure accurate and timely periodic Grant and Corporate Financial Reporting.
  • Lead in the coordination of all requested items for the annual audit and Form 990 tax submission.
  • Assist with the underlying formulas and methodologies for the completion of the annual budget.
  • Assist CFO as needed with financial reports, questions, etc. for the Foundation Board and Committees including the annual Board book
  • Work collaboratively with CFO on monthly monitoring investment portfolio and quarterly reconciliation, Fundriver uploads and posting of required investment entries
  • Work collaboratively with CFO to identify areas of process improvement, streamlining of processes and implementation of automation
  • Work collaboratively with CFO to ensure all daily, weekly and monthly key business functions are documented.
  • Work collaboratively with CFO on annual review of all policies and procedure manual
  • Active role in partnership with CFO on annual external auditors, Compliance audit and any other auditor engagements.
  • Communicate regularly with the Development Team to ensure accounting records are reconciled with development records.
  • Effectively communicate with CFO when reconciliations, bank reconciliations, ACH, IS and BS reconciliations etc. are completed and or are ready for approval
  • Prepare monthly grant reports for internal stakeholders to communicate financial performance, monitor spending, and coordinate modifications to planned spending.
  • Attend weekly one-on-one meetings with CFO
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • MUST HAVE A CPA OR BE SCHEDULE TO SIT FOR THE EXAM
  • At least three (3) years of Accounting Experience (Non-Profit Accounting Experience preferred)
  • Highly detail oriented and organized.
  • Ability act proactively
  • Function independently as determined by CFO
  • Ability to use sound financial judgement in making recommendation and or decisions
  • Perform duties with minimal daily direction from CFO to accomplish objectives.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Must display ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • A strong dedication to providing superior customer service as it relates to both internal and external customers.
  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of Excel, Outlook and Microsoft Word applications is required.
  • Experience with Blackbaud and Fundriver a plus
  • Experience with investment portfolio reconcillations and accounting entries a plus
  • Highly flexible to changes in the work environment. Manages competing demands, priorities, or unexpected events well.
  • Confidentiality compliance must be maintained at all times.

Physical setting:
  • Office and work from home - hybrid schedule.

Schedule:
  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday
