Company Description
Job Description
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City's evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the city towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, providers, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.
The DOC seeks to recruit Arts Project Coordinators who will be responsible for implementing and facilitating rehabilitative and behavioral modification treatment within the General Population and (Enhanced Supervision Housing) ESH program for the detainee populations. Selected candidates will facilitate organized therapeutic art-focused group activities that promote positive interpersonal skills and increase self-esteem, while productively addressing behavior and emotional management. Under supervision by the Fine and Performing Art Deputy Director, Arts Project Coordinators will be responsible for:
-Developing and implementing age-appropriate therapeutically based arts programs and
engagement strategies that align with development of prosocial skills, self awareness, and
emotional management tools, and increase self-worth and self-image for individuals in DOC custody;
-Coordinating with appropriate community partners and creating proposals for new, appropriate
arts partnerships that enhance the programs' Fine and Performing Arts reach;
-Building the DOC capacity to provide arts programming by determining arts needs of targeted
groups and encouraging people in custody to engage in organized arts activities which contribute
to increased health and wellness and decreased stress;
-Developing, implementing, and monitoring various types of art programming for individuals
in the custody of the Department of Correction based on the needs and interests of people in custody;
-Assisting with the development of strategies as well as short- and long-term goals related to
the expansion of arts programming and evaluating program effectiveness while serving as an
integral part of the arts team;
-Conducting periodic inspections of equipment and facilities;
-Assisting with special projects as necessary;
Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Additional Information
The City of New York is an inclusive equal opportunity employer committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce and providing a work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment based upon any legally protected status or protected characteristic, including but not limited to an individual's sex, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, veteran status, gender identity, or pregnancy.
