Department Overview
Gas Pipeline Operations and Maintenance is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. GPO&M is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.
Position Summary
This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining.
The Apprentice Station Operator will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and servicing of all underground storage facilities, Compressor Station facilities, transmission lines and appurtenant facilities with or without supervision. The operator is responsible for all station routing changes using SCADA and manual and automatic valves in conjunction with pneumatic, electronic, and computer-based control systems and compressor.
*This is an 18 month Apprenticeship program with a three year commitment to the Position/Location
This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $49.76 per hour. This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.
Responsibilities
Operating and service duties include:
- Monitoring and taking reads from various meters and gauges
- Starting and stopping equipment.
- Having thorough knowledge of operating principles, equipment, operating procedures, safety rules and general operating orders.
- Operating all facilities in automatic, semi-automatic and manual modes.
- Routing all station changes using SCADA, manual and automatic valves in conjunction with pneumatic, electronic, and computer-based control systems and compressors.
- Assist with training and instructing new and existing employees in proper operating techniques
- Maintenance duties include: routine repair; greasing valves, cleaning separators, changing filters, repairing leaks, and providing assistance as needed.
- Assist in performing, testing and operating equipment. In addition, will be required to perform station security, cleaning, painting and housekeeping duties.
- Assist with materials handling and processing paperwork as needed in the facility.
- Compiles and generates reports using computer equipment and software.
- Updates various logs as required by PG&E standard practices. Clearances: writes, reviews, and facilitates approval through Gas System Operations (GSO) of all clearances at the facility.
- Take appropriate action in emergency situations, including emergency personnel "callouts."
- Manages all base radio communications, telephone and PC logging activities and takes
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
- Must possess a valid California Driver's License
- Ability to work flexible schedules, extended hours, nights, weekends, and/or overtime (scheduled or ad hoc)
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a minimum
- Ability to work shift schedule
- Willingness to work in remote locations
Desired Qualifications:
- Related PG&E or Hiring Hall experience preferred
- Gas background experience or operations experience
- Graduate from one of the following: Power Pathway® Bridge to Pre-apprentice/Utility Worker program or one of the Power Pathway® endorsed programs: ETEC, Los Medanos College
- Experience performing data entry on a computer system
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via radio and phone
- Strong ability to understand and apply technical concepts and procedures
- Strong ability to successfully perform multiple tasks under pressure
- To better represent the communities we serve within a timely manner, applicants who live within 60 miles of the headquarter location will be given preference
