Animation Lead Instructor - CAPSA

CAPSA: Creative Labs is a 4- week summer interdisciplinary arts program designed for high school students to explore, interact, and play with all the disciplines taught at CalArts. CAPSA: Creative Labs(CAPSA) classes are led by CalArts artist educators.
Each class has 25- 30 high school students and is led by a group of five artist educators in their respective art form: 3 lead instructors ( one main lead instructor), and two Teacher Assistants. The program is hosted at Susan Miller Dorsey High School in the Crenshaw District in South Los Angeles from July 3 to July 28, 2023 and Saturday, July 29, 2023. Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
All Lead Instructors report directly to CAP Program Manager Alma Catalán and the Main Lead Instructor. Additionally, Lead Instructors are expected to work collaboratively with the summer coordinators and other program staff. Lead Instructors serve as positive role models for participants in CAP programs by supporting CAP participants' artistic development, encouraging participants' experimentation and risk-taking in their art form, honoring their diversity, and being open to a variety of viewpoints. The program culminates in an art festival showcasing student work and performances.
Lead Instructors are scheduled to work 30 hours per week and will receive a pay rate of $30 hourly. In addition, Lead Instructors will be required to complete a teaching artist training: six workshops each 3 hours long and will receive a pay rate of $15. Please note training workshops will be held on Saturdays May 20- June 24, 2023. More information to come.
JOB DUTIES (include but are not limited to):
TEACHING
- Designing and implementing an engaging, concise, and effective one day lesson for high school students. Lesson plans will need to be submitted to CalArts CAP Program Manager for review before the program begins
- Maintaining an efficient classroom of up to 30 high school students for in person classes including a lunch break with students
- Collaborating with other team instructors to plan and finalize a four-week curriculum and execute the end of the program culmination
- Creating a safe learning environment that encourages student participation and creativity
SUPERVISING
- (For some positions) Working with, training, and supervising the two Teacher Assistants (TAs) in compliance with all State and Federal Labor Laws
- Working with the CAP Program Manager to resolve performance-related issues regarding TAs in the program
PROGRAM SUPPORT
- Attending all mandatory orientation & training sessions
- Available for all class dates and culmination date
- Creating a safe learning environment for youth participants and student instructors. Abiding by the rules, regulations, policies, and directives of CalArts CAP as they now exist or as may be adopted by CalArts and/or CalArts CAP during the appointment period.
- Ensuring that student instructors follow all CalArts CAP policies & procedures at CalArts CAP Program site
- Working in collaboration with the Program Manager to plan, coordinate and administer the CAP Creative Labs program, including maintenance and storage of class google folders, planning culmination events, equipment load in and load out, and other related tasks
REQUIREMENTS
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Exceptional ability to work well with and effectively relate to students, faculty, and staff
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent classroom management skills with high school students
- Punctuality at all class dates and events/s
- Live Scan certification
- Ability to assess students' progress and skill levels objectively
- Open to ongoing commitment to strengthening teaching practice through feedback, professional development, and collaboration
- Experience working with English language learners and students with special needs is a plus
EDUCATION
- BA degree in arts, education, community arts or relevant field of study. MA or MFA preferred
EXPERIENCE
- In-depth knowledge and expertise in Character Animation or Experimental Animation
- At least 2 years of previous experience instructing beginners to advance students ( youth)
- Experience developing lesson plans and curriculum with learning goals and clear lesson objectives
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS (include but are not limited to):
- Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, or walking
- Kneeling, crouching, stooping, or bending to interact with students, demonstrate movement or to retrieve equipment and materials
- Reach at, above or below shoulder level to reach equipment, files, or materials
- Pushing/pulling open and closed doors, cabinets and drawers, equipment
