Position Highlights
University Animal Care (UAC) at the University of Arizona is in search of an Animal Technician II. This is an entry level position. The position is distinguished from the Anima Care Technician III in that incumbents are expected to be in cage wash and facility cleaning for most of the day. The incumbent will be trained in animal care and will be assigned to cover time off and vacations for the facilities Animal Tech IIIs.
University Animal Care (UAC) provides humane and appropriate animal care, ensuring that the highest standards are met so that each animal's well-being is attended to. This includes providing for the animals' daily needs for clean, safe housing and access to fresh food and water; the provision of necessary veterinary care; and the monitoring of the use of animals by principal investigators and their personnel.
We provide services and resources needed by investigators to accomplish their research objectives and provide training in laboratory animal care and use to technical personnel, students, and faculty.
Our staff, through contacts with the media and the public, works to enhance understanding and support for the humane use of animals in research and teaching programs at the University of Arizona.

Duties & Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Dirty side cage wash duties - Incumbent is expected to break down cages that are no longer in use, cleaning equipment that is rotated out of animal spaces, including using an air compressor. They will be expected to wrap and move pallets for recycling and assist with the pickup of the dirty pallets. Assists with removal of facility trash. Operate dump stations, tunnel washers, rack washers, autoclaves, and bedding dispensers.
  • Cleaning and Sterilization - Incumbent will be assigned procedure and behavior rooms that will be expected to be cleaned per our SOP. They will run sterilization on supplies that are used in animal cages and procedures per out SOPs. Report problems or equipment malfunctions. May perform quality assurance tasks as directed.
  • Clean side cage wash duties - Incumbent is expected to make cages for Lab staff used for breeding, weaning, and experiments. Incumbent will make cages for animals incoming into the facility. Prepare caging and load for sanitization and sterilization.
  • Animal care - Incumbent will be trained in animal care per SOPs and will be assigned to cover time off and vacation of the Animal Care Tech IIIs at the facility. As the census grows, incumbent might be assigned to an animal room and will be responsible for daily servicing and caging of that room.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Problems encountered are varied, but generally with precedent. Resolution may require some analysis and interpretation, requiring innovation and creativity. Expected to independently propose solutions to problems for manager review, requiring innovation and creativity. Responsible for reviewing the effectiveness of programs, projects, or systems within own group / function, and making necessary adjustments.
  • Routinely interacts with peers and direct management. Exchanges information with other departments or external contacts to perform role and achieve objectives. May coordinate own work with that of other work groups.
  • Work is performed under supervision and receives detailed instructions to perform tasks. Follows priorities provided to them for performing work. Impact is focused on own job function (generalists) or specific work area (specialists).
  • Applies general knowledge of the organization, job content, practices and procedures. Has acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to be proficient in all aspects of job.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to move/lift/transport up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to maneuver cages, carts, and racks within the facility, which are on wheels and can weigh over 150 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience and 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • ALAT certification.
  • Cage wash or animal husbandry experience.
  • 5-7 year experience in a related field.
