Job description

PAWS Animal Control Officer ~ Rate of Pay $16.00-$18.00

General Description: Protects the safety of the public and the welfare of animals.

Examples of Duties:

Assists the public by locating lost pets, checking in stray animals, reuniting lost pets with owners. Educate the community of Animal Control laws, ordinances, and responsible pet ownership. Investigate animal cruelty and neglect. Connecting people within the community to resources for solutions to animal protection issues. Offer assistance and support services to those in need. Public safety.

Cares for animals by cleaning and disinfecting animal holding areas, maintaining facility aesthetics, feeding, watering, and grooming animals, monitoring the security of facilities, monitoring animals for illness, disease, and/or injury, administering medications to animals, evaluating animals for adoption potential, socializing animals in custody, and administering vaccines and oral dewormers.

Upon request, assists in the euthanization of impounded animals, including handling and holding animals for the procedure, in order to ensure humane treatment protocols are followed

Performs administrative support functions by preparing and maintaining a variety of files, records, reports, agreements, logs, and other related information

Performs other duties as assigned

Training and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and one year of experience in handling or training animals; or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid Florida driver’s license (required)

handle animals in a humane and safe manner
identify common animal diseases or disorders
handle diseased animals in a safe manner
assess the temperament of animals
clean and sanitize kennels
safely operate a motor vehicle
use tools and equipment particular to the trade including microscope, microchip scanner, medical supplies, Animal Control devices (muzzles, catch poles, etc.)
operate personal computer and related software applications (Chameleon & Microsoft 365)

Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require running, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity as well as repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Lifting in excess of 100lbs.
May engage in aerobic exertion when training and working with animals.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
