Animal Control Officer I (FLEX)!

About the Position:
The Animal Services Department is seeking (1) one service-oriented self-starter able to work in a fast-paced environment to fill a vacancy. The incumbent will be responsible for enforcing state and local laws relating to the safety, health, welfare, and control of both domestic and wild animals.

This individual will have frequent interaction with the public to explain laws and regulations relating to the care and control of animals and may issue citations and/or notices in connection with violations. Work requires the application of approved methods, techniques, and devices in the pickup and capture of injured, sick, and vicious animals to avoid or minimize personal risk. Incumbents may also perform field euthanasia as required.

Work schedule may vary, must be willing to work weekends and/or Holidays.

The ideal candidate will possess prior experience in customer service and the care and handling of animals in a kennel, veterinary or related setting.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D.; AND one (1) year of experience in the care and handling of animals in a kennel, veterinary, or related field or six (6) months at, or equivalent to, the level of the Animal Shelter Attendant in the City of San Bernardino; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid California driver’s license is required.
PC 832 within one year of hire.
Euthanasia Certificate preferred.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
The employee frequently works in extreme outside weather conditions and on slippery and uneven surfaces. The employee is often exposed to dangerous, injured, or diseased animals. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions; fumes or airborne articles; toxic or caustic chemicals, and zoonotic and other communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud within confined areas. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to manipulate, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, sit, talk, and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Supplemental Information

City Benefits:
The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:
  • Retirement – Participation in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Classic members with less than 6 months separation: CalPERS 2% at 55, single highest year plan. New members, CalPERS 2% at 62, three highest year average plan.
  • Health Insurance – Monthly contribution of $715.00 (Employee Only), $1,377.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,841.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual “Health Insurance Waiver Stipend” of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.
  • Leave – Vacation beginning at 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annually, 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance – The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.

Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who are not a member of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% @ 62; 3 year final compensation. New members will be obligated to pay 50% of the “normal cost” of their retirement benefits as required by State law.
