Animal Caretaker I Or Ii

Bucknell University is pleased to announce that we are hiring two new Animal Caretakers (level I or level II). Animal Caretakers are active participants in the routine care and husbandry of the animals housed on campus. These positions support the use of animals for teaching and research in the Psychology and Biology departments and the Neuroscience and Animal Behavior programs. The Animal Caretaker is expected to carry out their duties in strict adherence to USDA, OLAW, IACUC, and other relevant state and federal regulations, and based on best practices. These positions report to the Animal Caretaker Manager.
Job Duties:
Animal Caretaker I
Perform animal care duties including, but not limited to routine cleaning of cages and living spaces, feeding and food preparation, monitoring of food and liquid intake, animal handling and shifting, provision of adequate environmental enrichment, keep daily records on animal health, behavior, and provided care as required, and identify individual animals as appropriate.
Identify signs of illness, injury, pregnancy, or abnormalities in physiology or behavior of the animals and bring concerns to the lead Animal Caretaker.
Dispense medications at the direction of the attending veterinarian.
Have a working knowledge of basic research protocols as they pertain to animal care and husbandry practices.
Support students and faculty in scientific research and teaching efforts.
Building specific duties as required:
          In Biology vivarium: Safely operate cage washer, sterilizer and all                         aspects of cage washing.
          In Animal Behavior facility: Participate as needed in basic primate                         training.
Willingness to participate in appropriate professional development activities to maintain and/or enhance skills, in consultation with supervisor.
Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Animal Caretaker II
Perform animal care duties including, but not limited to routine cleaning of cages and living spaces, feeding and food preparation, monitoring of food and liquid intake, animal handling and shifting, provision of adequate environmental enrichment, keep daily records on animal health, behavior, and provided care as required, and identify individual animals as appropriate.
Detect and evaluate signs of illness, injury, pregnancy, or abnormalities in physiology or behavior of the animals when they occur. Consult the veterinarian, faculty, and/or relevant staff when medical procedures are called for.
Update veterinary records and assist veterinarians as needed with procedures, provide post-operative and emergency care, and dispense medications as directed.
Participate in department and IACUC inspections, site visits and other regulatory visits, as needed.
Provide guidance to student and casual care staff on day-to-day care matters as needed
Advise and support students and faculty to support research and teaching as appropriate, understanding that faculty members are responsible for all research and teaching activities within the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:
Animal Caretaker I
Previous experience in laboratory animal care, animal husbandry, and/or captive animal care; AND
        Willingness to obtain ALAT certification OR other relevant professional                  certifications,
       OR
        any combination of experience and education that provides the necessary            skills, knowledge and ability to perform assigned tasks.
Good communication skills and demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment
Technical proficiency for information management. Must be comfortable using email, Google docs, and spreadsheet programs (google sheets, Excel)
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
Ability to work weekends and some holidays and respond to emergencies as needed
Some immunizations required
Animal Caretaker II
At least 1 year of experience with laboratory animal care, animal husbandry, and/or captive animal care AND ALAT certified OR other relevant professional certifications OR a combination of experience and education that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to perform assigned tasks.
Good communication skills and demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment
Technical proficiency for information management. Must be comfortable using email, Google docs, and spreadsheet programs (google sheets, Excel)
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
Ability to work weekends and some holidays and respond to emergencies as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with laboratory animal care within the context of biomedical research
Experience working with non-human primates
Previous experience working with students, faculty, or researchers
Knowledge of animal care practices as outlined by the federal Animal Welfare Act and The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
Bachelor's Degree
Animal Caretaker II
Experience with laboratory animal care within the context of biomedical research, including postoperative care
Experience working with non-human primates
Previous experience in a clean room environment
Experience with animal training, enrichment, and behavior
Previous experience working with students, faculty, or researchers
Knowledge of animal care practices as outlined by the federal Animal Welfare Act and The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
Veterinary technician experience
Bachelor's Degree

Physical Demands:
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds without accommodation
Exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products
Requires indoor and outdoor work including exposure to inclement weather

Work Type: 
These positions are full-time, benefits-eligible, non-exempt staff positions.  These positions are eligible for up to a $1500 hiring bonus in accordance with program guidelines.
These roles are not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.

Salary Range:
This is a Staff Non-exempt position with a hiring range of $17-20 (NE07) - level I; or $19.50-$23 (NE09) - level II. The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
