Job description

Duties

  • Provides comprehensive care and handling (e.g. feeding, watering, turning out, grooming, monitoring and treating health) for a variety of heritage breed farm animals
  • Cleans and maintains animal stalls/pens/houses and farm related equipment
  • Mows and trims grass in farm, orchards, and historic areas, including around historic buildings, pens and fences using a riding lawn mower, push mower and string trimmer
  • Supports the Interpretive work group in their planning of interpretive programs and demonstrations to visitors
  • Plans and coordinates historic crops and plants in the vegetable garden, dye garden, and Ironmaster's garden
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on farm equipment and historic structures on the farm

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • A valid state driver's license is required.
  • The work is very physical and requires routinely lifting 50 lbs or more. It is performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including work in rain or snow.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Government housing may be available.

Qualifications

In order to be qualified for this position, you must possess the ability to do the work of an Animal Caretaker with only occasional inspection of the work by a supervisor. You must have experience caring for a variety of farm animals, by feeding, watering, and grooming them; monitoring animal health and providing basic medical care (e.g. worming, administering medicine, cleaning/dressing wounds); keeping records regarding animal health or breeding; and using mowers, tractors, and trimmers to maintain grounds and hand and power tools to perform repairs to fences or buildings.
