Summary of Purpose: Provides daily care, cleanliness, comfort, and Enrichment to KHS animals, ensuring excellent Animal Care.
Duties (Essential Functions):
Responsible for daily cleaning and sanitation of assigned animal and common areas with emphasis on disease control protocols; provide spot cleaning of animal areas throughout work schedule
Provide all animals with appropriate housing, food, water, bedding, toys and other mental stimulation and Enrichment, social interaction with humans and, where appropriate, members of own species
Handle dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately
Assist in determining the suitability of animals for adoption
Gain and maintain knowledge of all shelter standard medical procedures, vaccines, preventatives, and common diseases and their symptoms, transmission, prevention
Monitor health of animals and rapidly identify any health issues and report to Veterinary staff or supervisor
Monitor behavioral health of animals and rapidly identify any issues that may require special action and report to manager or supervisor
Assist as needed and directed in supporting foster, set-up, transport, behavior, and other critical shelter operations
Use shelter software systems and employee communication systems to keep accurate animal inventory, write animal behavior and other memos, and keep abreast of all staff communication
Work with and supervise volunteers to provide animals and humans with a safe, clean, organized, and pleasant experience
Provide basic grooming services to shelter animals as needed
Help ensure all animals in our care have photos, web write-ups, and profiles in software system
Help maintain an inventory of shelter supplies and communicate with appropriate manager to order supplies when needed
Unpack, sort, and organize donations as needed
Assist in maintaining a clean and uncluttered shelter environment; sweep, take out trash, wash windows, do laundry, etc.
Communicate with the supervisor on duty regarding unusual activities, significant problems or concerns
Patrol shelter grounds daily, picking up any trash and stool material
Assist other employees, clients, and volunteers in a cheerful and respectful manner as a representative of KHS
Provide professional, compassionate, stellar customer service to all who visit, call, volunteer, and donate
Follow and maintain excellent knowledge of organization cleaning, sanitation, and disease prevention protocols in order to provide a healthy and safe environment for animals and people
Other duties as assigned by a manager or supervisor
Qualifications/Requirements:
General dog and cat knowledge preferred
Great interpersonal skills both in person and by phone with clients, staff and volunteers
Ability to work independently with little direct supervision
Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to process paperwork accurately and efficiently
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced environment
Basic computer knowledge
Punctual and dependable
Humane attitude towards animals
Ability to manage the emotional aspect of end of life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances
Accept, support, and represent KHS core values, programs, policies and procedures
Background Check required
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking and standing on a regular basis while performing job functions.
Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to and exceeding 50 lbs.
Includes working with animals in a kennel/shelter setting (indoor/outdoor) with potential for exposure to allergens, zoonotic diseases, and cleaning chemicals
