Job description

General Summary of PositionObtains ultrasound images of the pregnant patient as part of the detailed fetal anatomic survey, first trimester and nuchal translucency screening, biophysical profile, and other Obstetric and Gynecologic imaging modalities according to physicians' specifications. Serves as Preceptor for new staff, medical students, residents, and fellows. Follows AIUM guidelines for screening and unit maintenance.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Performs all ultrasound procedures including, but not limited to: gestational age determination, fetal growth, placenta, amniotic fluid assays, complete fetal anatomy surveys (including fetal cardiac anatomy (anomalies), assessment of multiple gestations for serial growth, anatomy, guiding amniocentesis procedures, ectopic pregnancies, PIH/gestational diabetes growth asses, biophysical profiles, post and premenopausal GYN scans. Collaborates with physician(s) regarding the results.*
  • Works closely with MedStar Washington Hospital Center OB/GYN department to review and make recommendations for revision of policies, procedures, and regulations. Distributes and/or implements changes and revisions as necessary.
  • Performs daily QA for Ultrasound imaging and reporting system (Viewpoint) errors, i.e. incorrect examination/data entry, patient information, missing or duplicate patient information.*
  • Serves as educational resource/mentor to guide and/or coordinate new hires/student instruction. Participates in quality assurance activities and provides liaison support between physicians, ultrasound staff and department management.*
  • Contributes to research studies, product development, process improvement, and special projects.
  • Presents reviews of interesting cases at staff and/or grant meetings.
  • Presents review of professional journal articles or seminar of current practice information at division staff meetings
  • Demonstrates clear understanding of MedStar policy and procedures in addition to mastery of skill sets needed for all routine procedures.*
  • Participates in departmental or divisional committees and task force. Participates in the implementation of unit assessments and audits, including quality assurance, equipment evaluation, and utilization of technology.
  • Assists with patient care by performing invasive procedures, and/or developing therapeutic programs.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary on-going quality improvement and /or quality control.
  • Participates in the formulation and implementation of unit goals, objectives, policies and procedures, and as appropriate, takes responsibility for specific department project evaluation.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education
    • Associate's degree required or
    • 1-3 years formal training in an approved ultrasound training program required and
    • Meets criteria of Professional Practices, Clinical Practices, Leadership, and Quality Improvement as stated by Career Ladder Standard Advanced Standard. required and
    • Presently holds Career Ladder position of Clinical Sonographer I or equivalent required or
    • RVT Certification preferred

    Experience
    • 3-4 years Job-related experience required

    Licenses and Certifications
    • RDMS-OB - Registered Diagnostic Med Sonographer-Ob At least 2 relevant registrations (including OB sonography) required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.
    • Job requires a moderate level of problem-solving.
    • Standard methods, guides, and procedures are generally available.
    • Responsible as an individual contributor.
