Montclair is a wonderful town that loves its library. In the last year, visits and program participation have doubled and circulation has increased 50 percent.
We are growing to meet this demand. We are looking for a Library Assistant in the Adult Services Department to meet this increasing demand. Now is an excellent time to join our innovative, diverse, congenial staff!
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide excellent customer service, which includes exhibiting a warm and welcoming demeanor
- Answer reference questions covering a wide range of difficulty which includes assisting patrons in selecting materials for informational or entertainment purposes
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the resources and services provided by Montclair Public Library as well as the New Jersey State Library and BCCLS
- Assist patrons using public computers
- Handle patron code of conduct violations, sometimes with the assistance of the Facilities and Security staff
- Assist with programs and events as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to de-escalate difficult situations
- High level of online skills such as the Internet searches, desktop and online applications, navigating websites
- Ability to learn how to use the full resources available, including the web catalog, the library consortium (BCCLS) Information Library System (Leap), digital resources, ebooks, downloadable materials, web subject guides, and resources of the New Jersey State Library including for the hearing and sight impaired, and historical information
- Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and a diverse and varied clientele
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS degree
- Minimum of one year of library or customer service experience
- Current knowledge of library trends and innovations
- Proficiency in conversational Spanish is a plus.
- Residency in the State of New Jersey will be required in accordance with New Jersey Revised Statutes § 52:14-7

WEEKLY SCHEDULE
- 16 hours weekly
- Ability to work afternoon and evening shifts (preferably Thursdays) as well as weekends (Saturdays and Sundays as part of a rotation). Availability for other daytime or evening shifts is a plus.
SALARY
- $17.37 per hour
