Spokane Community College's Corrections Education Department at Airway Heights Corrections Center seeks qualified and committed candidates to serve as adjunct faculty. The department is looking for energetic and creative instructors to teach any of the following content:
  • GED test preparation (Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA), Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies).
  • High School+/High School Completion.
  • English as a Second Language.
  • Reentry curriculum.
This position may include a flexible teaching schedule to cover day and/or evening courses. All classes are held on site at the Airway Heights Correction Center.
The Corrections Education Department, part of the Extended Learning Division, is a student-centered department that changes the lives of justice-involved individuals and their families through the power of education and training at Airway Heights Correction Center. The faculty and staff provide stability through demonstrated longevity and dedication to serving students.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepares for and instructs courses in the disciplines offered within Adult Basic Education: GED preparation, High School+ (HS+), English as a Second Language (ESL) or Reentry skills in traditional and/or lab style classroom education modes.
  • Assesses, monitors, and documents student performance and advises students in meeting their educational goals by evaluating student progress and providing clear and timely feedback.
  • Communicates expectations and establishes clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include, but not limited to, developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process.
  • Maintains student records and completes paperwork required of the Department of Corrections (DOC) to include: enrollments, attendance, student conduct incidents.
  • Models professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions.
  • Complies with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Adheres to all DOC safety protocols and procedures.
  • Collaborates effectively within the Education department and with DOC staff while maintaining CCS values, goals, and objectives.
  • Supports and advances the CCS strategic plan, and performs all related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's?degree?from?an?accredited?institution combined with relevant teaching experience.
  • Ability to use a variety of teaching methods for instruction purposes.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in a corrections environment.
  • Ability to assess adult student learning.
  • Experience teaching adults.
  • Knowledge of a learning management system such as CANVAS.
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language.

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. CCS reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

Adjunct Faculty: Adjunct faculty must work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible, benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under ; TIAA-Cref retirement plan; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
