Position Summary:

The Department of Pediatrics seeks to hire an Adolescent Medicine specialist to join the Adolescent Medicine Section in the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (GPAM) at the University of North Carolina. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a growing specialty section and expand services, including mental health, integrated behavioral health, and juvenile justice outreach. Applicants should be board-certified or board-eligible in Adolescent Medicine and have Adolescent Medicine clinical experience beyond fellowship. Previous clinical and administrative leadership is strongly preferred. This position is an Associate Professor faculty appointment in the School of Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill.
As a faculty member, this individual will join a program that includes board certified Adolescent Medicine specialists, nurse practitioners, LCSWs, and other physicians with interests in adolescent health. The specialist will provide outpatient care at Raleigh and/or Chapel Hill clinical settings. Additionally, the Adolescent Program provides medical care at a youth detention center, youth psychiatric inpatient facility, and a hematology-Adolescent Medicine clinic for menstrual disorders as well as sickle cell disease. The Adolescent Program also works collaboratively with an eating disorder treatment center, a gender wellness Clinic, and a diagnostic clinic with a high proportion of adolescents with functional syndromes. Opportunities exist to expand to the outpatient specialty multidisciplinary clinics as well as offer inpatient consultative care at UNC Children’s Hospital.
In addition to clinical programs, the division and institution have important research activities and medical education in adolescent health. Research interests in the Adolescent Medicine Section include evaluation of the impact of telehealth services on adolescent consent and confidentiality, use of adolescent-friendly decision-making tools related to contraceptive options, and evaluation of factors impacting reproductive health autonomy in adolescents. GPAM’s division-wide research areas include the impact of social and contextual factors on health, childhood adversity, and health inequities. The Gillings School of Public Health and the Sheps Center for Health Services Research also offer opportunities for broader adolescent health research. Faculty may also have medical education efforts, such as teaching, curriculum oversight, and rotation supervision.
The GPAM division is one of the largest divisions in the Department of Pediatrics and in addition to Adolescent Medicine includes Primary Care, Developmental Behavioral health, and Child Abuse pediatrics. The division has a nationally-known and productive research program and faculty in addition to a long record of teaching excellence. The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina is an attractive place to live and work with great climate, schools, and both mountains and beach within a day drive.
GPAM Division Mission
We will transform health, well-being, and health care delivery for children, adolescents, and young adults as a leader in whole-person care. We will provide and increase access to high quality, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive patient- and family-centered care that optimizes the development, safety, and well-being of children and adolescents. Our innovative teaching, groundbreaking research, and advocacy to improve policy will lead to greater health equity for children and adolescents.
