The Department of Civil & Architectural Engineering and Mechanics invites applications for multiple adjunct faculty positions to teach the course CE 214 Statics in the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters. Topics include equilibrium of a particle, equivalent and resultant force systems, equilibrium, geometric properties of areas and solids, trusses, frames and machines, shear force and bending moments, and friction.

Fall 2023 classes begin August 21st and run through December 14th with final examinations the week of December 8-14th. Spring 2024 classes begin January 10th and run through May 9th with final examinations the week of May 3-9th.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Duties and responsibilities include three hours of lecture per week for approximately 15 weeks of the course. Incorporation of active learning during lecture classes is preferred. The course syllabus and material will be provided by the department head. The course material will include a textbook, pre-recorded lecture videos (to be watched outside of class), in-class activities, and example quizzes, homework, exams, etc.
  • Instructor will be responsible for coordinating Discussion section topics and office hours with the Teaching Assistant; the grader that will help grading assignments; and any preceptors if the course is taught in an active learning style.
  • Instructor will communicate and collaborate with other instructors of CE 214.
  • Instructor must be accessible by students in office hours that may meet on campus or via phone/Zoom for 3 hours per week during their instructional period. Also, the instructor should be available via email throughout the week.
  • Instructor will be responsible for preparing and delivering all lectures; development of homework and providing homework solutions to the grader; and development and grading of examinations.
  • Instructor is responsible for entering grades into the UA online system.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Selectedcandidate will hold a PhD in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering orrelevant background; or
  • MS degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent disciplineand 5+ years of experience with a PE; or
  • BS degree in Civil Engineering orequivalent discipline and 7+ years of experience with a PE.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong educational and work/research experience in structural engineering.
  • Experience teaching at the university level with preference to having taught this or a similar course.
