Adjunct Instructor- Computer Science (CSC101)

SUNY Ulster is currently accepting applications for a part-time adjunct teaching assignment in CSC101 Fundamentals of Computers for the spring 2024 semester. The course will be taught in person at the maximum-security Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, NY.

 

Position Definition:

Under the general supervision of the Prison Program Coordinator and the Computer Science

Coordinator, the Adjunct Instructor will provide instruction in accordance with established CSC- 101 course syllabus and departmental, SUNY Ulster, and Shawangunk Correctional Institution policies. The catalog course description for CSC-101 is as follows:

Students are introduced to the computer and some of its current uses in this computer literacy course which provides hands-on experience. Students learn to prepare documents, spreadsheets, and database reports during laboratory class time. The course is taught using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.

 

This course will be taught face-to-face in a specially-equipped classroom in the Shawangunk

Correctional facility one day a week from January 22 through May 6, 2024. Prison Program instructors are required to attend an orientation, be tested for tuberculosis, and undergo a criminal background check.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

• A willingness and ability to meet the special requirements necessary to teach in the prison environment.
• A commitment to meet during each scheduled class session and to teach or conduct learning exercises for the entire time period.
• To provide each student at the beginning of the course with a Course Outline which will include topics covered, and information about how the student will be assessed as per departmental guidelines.
• Accurately keep required class records on attendance and grading and submit when required.  Comply with all institutional, departmental, and prison policies and procedures.
• Give careful attention to all departmental and administrative communications by checking your SUNY Ulster email frequently.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

• A Masters' degree in a relevant field, a passion for teaching, and a familiarity with the community college mission.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the topics covered in the syllabi for this course.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of prison program students.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Relevant teaching experience in a community college or prison program setting.
