Position Description
Under the general direction of the Controller and Associate Controller this position is responsible for financial information systems management, tax, and accounting functions within the Controller's Office. This position manages two senior accountants to perform duties below.
Financial Information Systems (40%)
• Utilize data sources to support sound financial management and decision-making.
• Compile and analyze data from enterprise resource planning and other systems for use by university decision-makers and Controller's Office staff.
• Research financial information systems data to answer questions and solve problems raised by university financial managers.
• Document data sources and assumptions for recurring reports, surveys, and compliance.
• Provide support for financial information systems.
• Ensure that financial data is compiled in a consistent manner, is complete, and reliable.
• Maintain control over the general ledger chart of accounts.
• Serve as the Controller's office contact for general ledger integration with other systems such as the student services and human resources systems.
• Serve as the university contact for payment card merchant processing, integration with the general ledger, and PCI compliance.
Accounting and Tax Compliance Support (40%)
• Primary responsibility for preparing annual financial statement and ensuring successful audits.
• Researching and implementing new accounting guidance and standards.
• Documenting accounting transactions, including preparing journal entries and appropriate supporting documentation that indicates where information was obtained and the appropriateness in accordance with GAAP.
• Overseeing monthly and year-end close process.
• Working with auditors to provide supporting schedules and answer questions in a timely manner.
• Perform account reconciliations and provide information to support account reconciliations by other Controller's office staff.
Primary responsibility for all aspects of accounting for tax filings including:
• Managing university tax risks and preparing tax filings.
• Performing research and analysis on tax issues and developing tax related policies.
• Acting as primary liaison regarding IRS and tax authority inquiries.
• Working with third party accounting firm regarding tax issues related to university operations.
Primary responsibility for all aspects of accounting for split interest agreements (charitable gift annuities and trusts) including:
• Working with University Advancement and the university's contracted administrator to establish new agreements and terminations of agreements, including preparing general ledger entries.
• Preparing year-end entries for changes in asset valuations and FASB liabilities.
• Preparing periodic compliance reports required by the states of Washington and California for charitable gift annuities.
• Assists Controller and Associate Controller with general accounting functions including
• Supporting grant accounting functions such setting up projects in the accounting system's project module and periodically updating budgets.
• Developing and documenting policies and procedures for accounting operations.
• Demonstrating a continuous effort to improve and streamline current operations and work processes.
• Provides backup support to general accounting staff and other staff members in the Controller's office as needed.
Managing staff (15%)
• Responsible for managing staff accountants to accomplish department goals and responsibilities.
• Support the growth and development of staff.
Other duties as assigned (5%)
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in accounting and a minimum of four or more years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• CPA or advanced degree.
• Strong analytical skills with demonstrated experience research and analyzing data from a variety of digital sources, compiling financial statements, and an understanding of accounting for complex transactions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and decision-making skills.
• Proven ability to effectively lead and develop others in accomplishing common goals.
• Ability to work effectively in a collegial manner across all levels of the institution and the ability to maintain a professional problem-solving demeanor.
• Strong technical and computer skills required with highly developed attention to detail. Ability to effectively manage deadlines and multiple priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to use independent judgment and show initiative when resolving issues. Strong work ethic.
• Ability to handle stressful situations.
• Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Knowledge of computing systems, software, information storage and retrieval techniques and methods particularly as applied to accounting functions.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in higher education or other not-for-profit organizations.
• Knowledge of tax compliance relevant to not-for-profit organizations.
• Experience working in a public accounting firm.
• Experience working with complex accounting systems.
Physical demands:
• This position requires standard physical demands consistent with performing work in an office setting on a college campus.
• May need to traverse up to a half of a mile for in person meetings.
• Typically involves extended periods of sitting/standing and keyboarding.

Compensation at a Glance:
Salary Range: $100,000 - $108,000
Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.
