Job Description Summary
WVNCC seeks applicants for Academic Resource Associate /Advisor. This is an on-campus position on the New Martinsville Campus with college-wide duties.
Manage primary learning support services in the Academic Resource Center and advise students. Academic Resource Center job duties include tutoring, accessibility, First Year Seminar (FYS), testing/remediation/Early Entrance, library functions, and other support programs/services designed to increase student success and retention. Serve as a primary advisor for new students and a secondary advisor to returning students during periods of faculty absence. Advise students seeking ADA accommodations regarding ADA guidelines and processes. Advise academically at-risk students through the Academic Recovery Program (ARP). Provide holistic guidance and support that engages all students in the culture and community of WVNCC and facilitates the ability to persist and succeed.

Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to
Advising
  • Serve as a primary advisor for new students, including: initial intake/orientation (onboarding) of students to WVNCC academic and institutional policies and procedures;
  • Educate students about curricular options and success strategies; developing appropriate advisory relationships with assigned students;
  • Provide referrals appropriately to internal and external services and resources;
  • Use college software programs to track and document advising sessions, communications, and student progress;
  • Transition students to faculty advisors; advising returning students during periods of extended faculty absence (summer, holidays etc.);
  • Initiate and build relationships with faculty/academic departments; identifying appropriate contacts within academic departments/programs;
  • Maintain working knowledge of program curriculums, websites, policies; encouraging dialogue about student advising issues, policies, procedures, and promoting collaboration between staff and faculty advisors; sitting on committees and attending faculty meetings as needed.
Library
  • Assist with library services on the New Martinsville Campus, including reference, circulation, testing, and the LRC student computer
  • Provides general reference services and provides guidance and information for more in-depth research requests
  • Prepares items for course reserve using the automated course reserve system
  • Records and maintains circulation statistics
  • Provides coverage and assistance at the Circulation Desk
  • Uses the WMS Library System for Interlibrary Loan to assist patrons needing materials from other libraries

Tutoring
  • Provide support and monitor tutors in tutoring center
  • Collaborate with other campus tutoring personnel
  • Promote tutoring services; encourage the use of surveys for assessment data collection; initiate a follow up with no shows

Accessibility
  • Provide front-line support with accessibility services for students
  • Maintain confidential files and records on students including documentation of disability, contacts, testing, and other relevant information
  • Work with students and faculty to implement academic accommodations
First-year seminar
  • Serve as a mentor to new students through the first-year seminar course when needed
General
  • Provide customer service to internal and external individuals regarding College services, especially library and ASC services
  • Help students with computer navigation and student portal assistance
  • Participate in Open House programs and call campaigns
  • Prepare statistical information and other data reports
  • Participate in department meetings and trainings
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities; Additional Information
  • Ability to operate computers, including knowledge of college student systems and of software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Ability to operate standard office, audio-visual equipment, and basic knowledge of standard office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening ability.
  • Ability to assist students with the troubleshooting of problems that arise with various computer programs that they are required to use to complete class work in the library and/or the student computer lab
  • Excellent customer service skills
