Job Summary
Under he direc ion of he Direc or of Academic Advising and S uden Success, he Academic Advisor provides comprehensive advising for he College of Informa ion and Compu er Sciences (CICS) majors, explora ory rack s uden s, and in erdisciplinary s uden s from across campus pursuing he CS minor. Works closely wi h o her advising personnel as well as academic and career services personnel o ensure high quali y advising and academic services for all s uden s. May each one-credi seminars. Uses regis ra ion and academic records sof ware. Responsive o he needs of a large number of highly diverse s uden s and works in a high volume and fas -paced work environmen .
Essen ial Func ions

  • Provides comprehensive, individualized advising o a diverse popula ion of s uden s during he academic year, including during peak regis ra ion periods. Responds o s raigh -forward ques ions on regis ra ion-rela ed ma ers such as fulfilling Universi y general educa ion requiremen s and in erpre ing major, minor, or college requiremen s. Assis s s uden s wi h complex ma ers ha involve goal se ing and planning including es ablishing an academic plan, choosing a major, and selec ing courses wi h par icular emphasis on in egra ing CICS major requiremen s wi h s uden s' o her in eres s. Responds o a -risk s uden s experiencing academic difficul ies by addressing relevan issues and making appropria e referrals o Universi y agencies. Communica es and collabora es wi h o her uni s on campus such as Residen ial Life, a hle ic suppor services, ALANA, and disabili y services. Main ains consis en documen a ion on all advising in erac ions.
  • Assis s wi h he planning, implemen a ion, and developmen of innova ive programs designed o enhance he re en ion and academic progress of CICS majors, minors, and explora ory rack s uden s (such as he majors fair, newsle ers, and workshops). Responsible for special projec s o suppor he missions of he College and he CICS advising cen er.
  • Advises a diverse incoming (firs -year and ransfer) popula ion in a fas -paced, high volume small group advising forma during New S uden Orien a ion (NSO), which occurs each summer and again each January. Represen s CICS on universi y-level commi ees/ councils. Par icipa es in evening and weekend advising rela ed ac ivi ies (e.g., Open House even s, Majors Fair, career and advising fairs, indus rial affilia es even s, e c.).
  • Ac s as a s aff liaison for assigned s uden organiza ions. Provides guidance, resources, and suppor when hey are organizing even s and help hem s ay informed of ne working and s uden recrui men oppor uni ies such as "Come Home o Your College" and "Firs Fridays."
  • Provides raining and men orship for o her academic advising s aff. rains s aff on policy, procedure, course requiremen s, general knowledge, and sys ems o ensure hey have he ools o advise and suppor CICS s uden s effec ively.
  • A ends regional advising conferences and o her professional developmen even s. Ac ively collabora es wi h he advising ne work on campus in order o main ain bread h or s ay curren on campus advising knowledge, college & major upda es, new policies, bes prac ices, e c.
  • Collabora es wi h academic programs s aff and direc ors o develop, upda e, and main ain a library of academic plans ha are available and a lis of approved courses. Collabora es and racks join ini ia ives.
  • Ac s as a backup for he Advising Cen er Coordina or when hey are unavailable. his includes, bu is no limi ed o, gree ing s uden s, facul y, and s aff who en er he CICS Advising Office, answering he main phone line, opening and closing he office, accep ing mail and packages, and direc ing he s uden workers as needed.

Minimum Qualifica ions (Knowledge, Skills, Abili ies, Educa ion, Experience, Cer ifica ions, Licensure)
  • Bachelor's Degree in any field (Higher Educa ion, Guidance and Counseling, Compu er Science, or rela ed field preferred) wi h a leas hree (3 )years of experience in academic advising OR an equivalen combina ion of educa ion and experience.
    • One (1) year of relevan experience may be subs i u ed for every one (1) year of required academia.
  • S rong in erpersonal skills wi h he abili y o in erac effec ively, and crea e and main ain harmonious rela ionships wi h a diverse popula ion of s aff, facul y, s uden s, and off-campus cons i uen s. Abili y and willingness o work empa he ically wi h a diverse s uden popula ion and con ribu e o heir success.
  • S rong wri en and verbal communica ion skills. Abili y o wri e concisely, express hough s clearly, and develop ideas in a logical sequence.

Work Schedule
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00pm.
