Job Description

The Biochemistry Department in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences seeks to fill a 32 hour week part-time salary position with health insurance and pro rated benefits, calendar year Academic and Student Support Advisor position. This administrative/professional faculty position will work with our Advising team to provide accurate, timely advising services and undergraduate program coordination to the department related to degree requirements and academic course options, recruitment and retention, admissions process, placement and registration, department and college orientation and retention activities, and professional representation and communication of the department and its programs to the internal/external university community, public sector, industry and alumni. The Advisor will work proactively and collaboratively with the college academic affairs department to provide synergy and consistent, professional advising to all students of the college, work with faculty to assist finding undergraduate research opportunities, and develop partnerships with other CALS and life science units to best meet advising needs of Biochemistry students, including but not limited to Pre-Medical advising and career advising. The Advisor will develop and implement information-gathering to help aid in student success and retention. The Advisor will work with the department Communications Coordinator to enhance/develop materials for the advising manual, biochemistry web site, orientation sessions, and other workshops. The Advisor will serve as the instructor for one section of the Biochemistry First Year Experience course.

Required Qualifications

M.S. in Biochemistry, Life Sciences, Higher Education, Student Affairs or related field and experience in or related to advising students/interacting with students or the public; or, any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties; Must have strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to implement web-based advising tools and other information resources; Ability to interact effectively with diverse students of various ages, abilities and ethnic backgrounds; Excellent communication skills in a variety of formats (oral, written, phone) for effective communication with students and prospective students, parents, faculty, alumni, university and community stakeholders; Ability and expertise in dissemination of information in a clear and concise manner, maintaining detailed and accurate records and providing appropriate referrals to other departments and university resources.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in undergraduate engagement; Knowledge of student development theories and services, appreciative advising, counseling skills and recruitment/retention strategies
