Job Summary
Under he direc supervision of he CNS Direc or of Firs Year Advising, he Firs Year Academic Advisor/Firs Year Senior Academic Advisor provides comprehensive advising for College of Na ural Sciences (CNS) firs year s uden s in various majors, including CNS explora ory rack s uden s. his posi ion works closely wi h o her advising personnel o ensure high quali y advising and academic services for all s uden s, wi h par icular emphasis on programma ic needs for firs year s uden s. he posi ion is responsive o he widely varied needs of diverse s uden popula ions and works in a high volume and fas -paced work environmen .
Essen ial Func ions

  • Provides comprehensive, individualized, and small group advising o a diverse popula ion of s uden s during he academic year, including new s uden orien a ion/regis ra ion periods and curren s uden regis ra ion periods.
  • Par ners wi h he depar men s of heir advisees o successfully build communi y wi hin he major and successfully ransi ion firs year s uden s in o he depar men -based advising for he sophomore year.
  • Responds o common issues such as regis ra ion-rela ed ma ers including fulfilling he universi y's general educa ion requiremen s, in erpre ing major and college requiremen s, and providing guidance for course enrollmen .
  • Assis s s uden s wi h ma ers ha involve goal se ing, self-assessmen , ime managemen skills, planning and decision-making such as es ablishing an academic plan, choosing a major wi hin and ou side of he College of Na ural Sciences, and selec ing courses.
  • Iden ifies and responds o a -risk s uden s experiencing academic and cri ical personal difficul ies.
  • Provides proac ive and responsive in erven ions o suppor s uden success.
  • Provides arge ed ou reach and suppor o firs year s uden s on Academic Warning and Academic Proba ion.
  • Responds o inquiries from paren s in accordance wi h FERPA in a highly professional and respec ful manner.
  • Regularly helps develop and offer ac ivi ies and workshops for CNS s uden s, including informa ion sessions abou CNS majors for curren and prospec ive s uden s.
  • Par icipa es in CNS ac ivi ies, including Fall Visi Days, Des ina ion Days, Senior Celebra ion, and o her ac ivi ies and even s ha may be developed.
  • Represen s CNS Undergradua e Advising on college and universi y-level commi ees and councils.
  • Assis s in raining new professional and gradua e s uden advisors by providing hem wi h he mos curren informa ion abou requiremen s in CNS and o her majors.

Academic Advisor addi ional essen ial func ions:
  • Con ribu es o he complex college gradua ion clearance process. Main ains familiari y wi h all changes in degree programs and execu e college curricular excep ions.

Senior Academic Advisor addi ional essen ial func ions:
  • Men ors less experienced Firs Year advisors wi h advising bes prac ices and in addressing complex advising challenges.
  • Responsible for complex college gradua ion clearance process. Main ains familiari y wi h all changes in degree programs and execu e college curricular excep ions.

  • Works collabora ively and effec ively o promo e eamwork, diversi y, equali y and inclusiveness.

Minimum Qualifica ions (Knowledge, Skills, Abili ies, Educa ion, Experience, Cer ifica ions, Licensure)
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Excellen oral, wri en and in erpersonal communica ions skills.
  • S rong organiza ional skills.
  • In ermedia e level compu er proficiency.
  • Abili y o ake ini ia ive and work independen ly and collabora ively.
  • Demons ra ed commi men o con inued learning or professional developmen on diversi y, equi y and jus ice issues.

Academic Advisor addi ional minimum qualifica ions:
  • Documen ed experience in academic advising, s uden suppor , or o her rela ed s uden -facing roles.

Senior Academic Advisor addi ional minimum qualifica ions:
  • wo (2) years documen ed experience in academic advising, s uden suppor , or o her rela ed s uden facing roles.
  • Able o manage a high volume of complex and varied clien needs.
  • Able o recognize a -risk individuals and provide appropria e suppor and direc ion.
  • Highly knowledgeable wi h respec o FERPA, i le IX.

Preferred Qualifica ions (Knowledge, Skills, Abili ies, Educa ion, Experience, Cer ifica ions, Licensure)
  • Bachelor's degree in science or ma hema ics discipline.
  • Mas er's degree in educa ion, science, ma hema ics or rela ed field.
  • Experience serving or working wi h a large cul urally diverse popula ion.
  • Experience supervising s aff or s uden s.

Academic Advisor addi ional preferred qualifica ions:
  • Able o manage a high volume of complex and varied clien needs.
  • Able o recognize a -risk individuals and provide appropria e suppor and direc ion.
  • Highly knowledgeable wi h respec o FERPA, i le IX and all Universi y Academic Rules and Regula ions.

Senior Academic Advisor addi ional preferred qualifica ions:
  • Professional eaching experience.

Work Schedule
  • Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Required o work some nigh s and weekends.
