Duties and Responsibilities: Band A
1. Provide academic advising to undergraduate students within the College of Natural Sciences.
2. Evaluate and monitor student academic progress and the impact on achievement of goals, including progress checks, graduation checks, and taking appropriate institutional action.
3. Provide input into the development of academic advising and services across the college and carry out assigned tasks in the implementation and management of these services.
4. Assist in coordination of retention-centered programs for undergrad students, including arranging for experts and other campus resources to speak about recruitment, orientation, mentorship, career development, graduation, and alumni relations.
5. Assist in the planning and implementation of student community building events.
6. Participate in on-campus trainings and advising-related topics.
7. Travel to conferences annually, if budget allows.
8. Assist in recruiting students at college and career fairs around the Island; possible evening, weekend, and off-campus assignments to accommodate prospective student needs.
9. Assist the College’s departments in maintaining accurate four-year degree plans and program sheets for undergraduate majors within the College of Natural Sciences.
10. Provide departmental authorization for students in selected courses for registration.
11. Establish and maintain electronic academic records for each student.
12. Establish and maintain regular communication with student majors via email and other means.
13. Facilitate access to research, scholarship, internships, employment, and advanced study opportunities.
14. Assist in the assessment of advising activities.
15. Review and update academic and student affairs websites, pertaining to academic advising.
16. Assist in the development and maintenance of printed program information documents for degree requirements, student recruiting, and monitoring of student progress.
17. Keep abreast with UH curriculum changes and academic information important to undergraduate students.
18. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Band A
1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in an Arts and Sciences discipline or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for academic counseling or advising; or equivalent education/training or experience.
2. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques improving retention and graduation rates in higher education demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts and terminology.
3. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with higher education.
4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the practice of academic counseling and advising.
5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
8. Analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to identify and determine the appropriate level of advising or referral services for individual students.
9. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact and communicate with diverse individuals and work as part of a team.
10. Skill in using a variety of technology resources, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office products, automated student information systems, databases, email, web browsers, and social media.
11. Demonstrated ability to perform complex tasks, experience with independently initiating necessary action and coordinating many activities concurrently, as well as establishing priorities and seeing tasks to completion.
12. Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
13. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications: Band A
1. Master's degree in education, higher education, advising, counseling or a natural sciences field.
2. Experience in working with a diverse student body, and knowledge of their academic needs and concerns.
3. Working knowledge of post-secondary curricula, academic requirements, and policy.
4. Experience maintaining confidentiality of student records and knowledge of state and federal laws governing confidentially of student records and university policy regarding privacy of information.
5. Familiarity with Banner student information system.
6. Experience in the discipline of advising, retention, and program development in the University setting.
7. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques employed in academic advising, demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and the ability to apply concepts/terminology.
8. Working knowledge of biological sciences, post-secondary curricula and the interrelationship with the physical sciences.
9. Evidence of college/campus level student group facilitation.

Duties and Responsibilities: Band B
