Ajo, Arizona is an unincorporated community in the southwest corner of Pima County. Beginning as a mining community, Ajo is redefining itself as a retirement and tourism locale, complete with a growing population of artists and craftspeople. Nestled in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, Ajo is in close proximity to the Tohono O'odham Nation and, just 15 miles south, along the Sonora, Mexico border is Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, honored by UNESCO as an International Biosphere Reserve for its biodiversity. Residents and travelers enjoy hiking, mountain biking, scenic drives, camping, and abundant desert wildlife. With clear night skies, stargazing is always appreciated.
The Pima County Public Library (PCPL) acknowledges the sovereignty of Native Nations and acknowledges the twenty-two federally recognized Indigenous tribes of the state of Arizona and those who inhabit Pima County. We honor the vast and often unrecognized contributions and sacrifices of Indigenous people and are conscious of the ongoing experience of inequality and political invisibility. In partnership with Native Nations, PCPL advocates for full access to its education, information, and recreational resources.
