Job Summary:
The Standard is seeking an experienced actuarial professional to lead the Actuarial department for our Individual Disability Insurance (IDI) business including responsibilities for financial reporting, product pricing, governance and risk oversight, internal controls, reinsurance and financial analysis related to strategic business decisions, meeting financial and operational goals and optimizing business profitability. In this role, you'll serve as a key member of the IDI senior leadership team and actively engage with other business line and corporate actuarial leaders to define and lead actuarial strategy and best practices within The Standard's actuarial community and support enterprise actuarial transformation.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Contribute as a key business leader to the success of The Standard’s IDI business by meeting or exceeding performance objectives for the following major job functions:
25% Define and execute the actuarial strategy for the IDI business including product development and pricing, risk management and other financial initiatives, actuarial transformation, adherence to industry standards and best practices and optimization of business profitability. Actively engage with other enterprise actuarial leaders to define and implement enterprise actuarial strategy and transformation.
25% Oversee the review and signoff of the actuarial opinion on pricing, reserves and cash flow testing for the IDI business and ensure that ongoing business financial results are complete and accurate. Work with Corporate Accounting and Actuarial leaders on the implementation of new accounting standards and other regulatory reporting requirements
20% Work closely with the business leader, sales, underwriting and product resources to balance profitability and growth in a disciplined and long-term approach. Use data to proactively identify risks and opportunities and inform decision making. Consider feedback from customers and distribution partners in the design of products and pricing. As a key member of the IDI senior leadership team, provide thought leadership on strategic initiatives.
20% Onboard, develop, and lead employees on the IDI Actuarial team. Foster an inclusive and engaging work environment. Hold self and team accountable to behavior and performance in accordance with our values and competencies. Proactively use huddles, metrics, data, dashboards, and problem solving to understand workloads and opportunities for recognition and improvement. Identify, monitor, and improve key performance and productivity metrics and engage teams and peers in effective problem solving. Identify, prioritize, and execute on improvements that align with the business strategy, enhance customer value and improve operational efficiencies.
10% Manage large and complex actuarial initiatives, business projects and cross-divisional efforts. Coordinate with other business and actuarial leaders to effectively manage budgets, timely identify roadblocks and issues, and drive collaborative problem solving and continuous improvement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong critical thinking, planning, prioritizing, decision-making and attention to detail with demonstrated expertise in financial modeling, actuarial analysis and project management.
  • Proven ability to research, analyze and develop complex financial models; communicate complex ideas effectively to non-technical audiences; maintain positive rapport and collaborate with other business and actuarial leaders; independently manage workload for self and team.
  • Knowledge of actuarial concepts and modeling methodologies, insurance accounting principles, financial reporting and forecasting.
  • Demonstrated experience excelling in a feedback-oriented culture and leading through change.

Job Specifications:
  • Required experience: 10+ years of post- fellowship experience within the insurance industry including experience working across functions and prior proven success in risk management. Strong demonstrated people leadership including leadership of other people leaders.
  • Required professional licensure or certification: Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) or equivalent international designation, with additional financial or risk management credentials a plus (e.g., CFA, PRM, CRM, CERA, etc.).

Employees in this role are eligible for fully remote work (other than periodic in-person meetings or other periodic business travel).
Travel Requirements:
Occasional travel only (such as for planning purposes, team-building, or conferences) may be required.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and
comprehensive benefits
including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.

$182,000.00 - $303,250.00
