Position Summary

Education for Change is looking for several dynamic and visionary Speech Language Pathology Assistants who will engage students, families, and other members of our learning community to ensure high student achievement, as well as support mental health and behavior in an effort to ensure children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. Under the supervision of the SLP and according to the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) scope of practice in California, the SLPA will implement therapeutic plans designed to develop language skills, including speech production, vocalization, and social pragmatics in students with speech/language disorders. They will also assist with administrative work, meetings, and collaboration with families. They will know how to successfully work in an urban elementary school with a high English Learner and low-income population, including traumatized students.

We offer inclusion, resource instruction, combined programs that include both inclusive and small group instruction, and specialized programs for students with autism, those in need of emotional supports, and students with more moderate needs. Utilizing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports, our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to analyze and problem solve around student and staff needs. We employ a whole child approach that not only meets the basic needs of our students, but also takes into consideration their socio-emotional, academic and behavioral needs.


About Education for Change Public Schools

Founded in 2005, Education for Change (EFC) is a charter management organization that was created as a partnership between Oakland Unified School District and the education reform community in order to leverage the flexibilities in charter law to facilitate greater innovation and to address the underperformance of our most vulnerable student populations. EFC is Oakland’s largest charter operator, serving over 3,000 students in the Fruitvale and Elmhurst neighborhoods of East Oakland. Five of seven of our schools were formerly OUSD schools that converted to EFC to leverage the flexibility and agility provided by charter law for greater outcomes for our students.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized speech and language services to students as direct by the supervising SLP
  • Conduct speech and language screenings developed by the SLP without interpretation
  • Prepare therapy and instructional materials and strategies for students in the classroom setting or in pullout small group settings
  • Adapt or modify instructional materials as determined by student need and abilities for teacher use in the classroom
  • Consult with general ed teachers to co-plan instructional materials or implement strategies
  • Track performance data using progress monitoring tools and report progress on IEP goals
  • Communicate progress to parents, teachers, and SLP in regular meetings, phone conversations, and progress notes
  • Participate in IEP process; attend meetings when appropriate and attend family conferences
  • Creates and maintains safe, positive environment for students
  • Collaborates with members of the IEP team, Special Education team
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned
  • Transport students, as necessary
  • Attend all mandatory professional development and supervision
  • Maintain strict student and parent confidentiality

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years experience as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant, treating speech, language and cognitive-communication disorders in school-aged children
  • Associate degree and/or graduation from Speech-Language Pathology Assistant
  • Program
  • CA state licensure
  • Personal commitment to driving positive outcomes for students
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Must possess a growth mindset and be able to use feedback to refine practice
  • Successful experience working in a collaborative environment
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Own reliable transportation and verification of insurance coverage (mileage reimbursable)
  • Spanish Bilingual


Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year experience operating SEIS
  • Experience working with English Language Learners
  • Outstanding communication and organization skills
