Position Information
Temporary student positions within the utility are available during the 2024 summer months to provide assistance in various areas at the PUD. A limited number of office and/or outside labor positions will be available.
Requirements:
To qualify, students must be 18 years of age, be enrolled in a full-time academic, technical, or vocational undergraduate program and be attending the program in the Fall of the academic year immediately following summer employment.
Students are hired to fill positions covered by collective bargaining agreements with IBEW Local No 77.
A new application for Student employment must be submitted each year. A student may work up to four (4) calendar months per year and a maximum of four (4) years.
Status: Temporary, Full-time, Non-exempt.
Work Week and Hours: Monday - Friday
Temporary Student Helper - Office: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Temporary Student Helper - Operations: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
Wage Rates:
Temporary Student Helper - Office: $22.45/hour
Temporary Student Helper - Operations: $23.80/hour
Benefits:
Student employees are not eligible for fringe benefits; nor do they accrue seniority. Student employees will accrue Paid Sick Leave beginning at the start of employment in accordance with the District's Paid and Other Leave policy. By nature of the definition of an eligible position, membership in the Washington State Retirement System will not apply to student employees.
Duties and Responsibilities
TEMPORARY STUDENT HELPER - OFFICE
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A) Customer Service Department
1. Answer and route incoming calls at switchboard.
2. Serve as the first line of customer contact, which includes handling confidential information and documentation.
3. Perform cashiering duties.
4. Sort and distribute customer correspondence.
5. Process inter-office and outgoing mail.
B) Clerical Support in other Departments
  1. Provide data entry services, using word processing, database, spreadsheet, or other personal computer software programs.
  2. Perform routine clerical duties such as typing, sorting, and filing assorted records, reports, correspondence, and other documents.
  3. Answer phones for various personnel in their absence.
  4. Schedule, prepare and distribute Xeroxing for District departments.
  5. Provide assistance and backup, as necessary, to the administrative department.
  6. Collect and distribute internal mail to individual departments (non-essential).

C) Miscellaneous Duties
1. Provide clerical back-up during absences.
2. Perform other related duties as assigned.
TEMPORARY STUDENT HELPER - OPERATIONS (Outside Labor)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform routine, non-skilled tasks to assist various departments. Work may be done when working with a crew or individually.
  • May do various manual work alone or as an extra with a crew.
  • Do general housekeeping.
  • Scrape, prime, paint, tag and number distribution transformers for issue.
  • Retrieve supplies from other departments.
  • Under qualified Journeyman supervision, clear brush from around switch poles, padmount transformers and switching enclosures.
  • Caulk windows and paint walls of District buildings.
  • Pressure wash building, roofs, gutters. Work on ladders or roof will only be done with qualified supervision.
  • Clean storage yards and buildings.
  • Hose down loading dock.
  • Use street sweeper in parking areas.
  • Check and put away inventory.
  • Do general housekeeping.
  • Pick up or deliver parts.
  • Wash vehicles.
  • Paint trailers.
  • Assist garage helper.
  • Meter Department
  • Clean meter covers.
  • Do repetitive non-essential paper work.
  • Clean meter room and metering area in storeroom.
  • Wash and dry rubber safety equipment.
  • Input data into a personnel computer.
  • Assist meter personnel in junking meters.
  • Drive District pick-ups for basic transportation to work assignments. (non-essential)
