This intern position is within the Sterile Product Development (SPD) group in the Drug Product Development (DPD) department located in New Brunswick, NJ. DPD develops formulation and processes to enable drug products at both clinical and commercial stages. The intern will focus on exploring the mechanism behind adeno-associated virus (AAV) freeze/thaw degradation utilizing existing SPD techniques and knowledge. The intern is expected to study and optimize formulations that can mitigate the negative impact of freeze/thaw cycles on AAV particles and potentially establish a quality attribute for future SPD projects involving AAV molecules.
Specific goals are:
We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated and self-driven; have demonstrated innovative problem-solving ability and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. We are asking for experience in one or more of: liquid chromatography, spectroscopic characterization, light scattering, thermodynamic analysis, adeno-associated virus, and protein folding.
Summer interns will work with mentors for ~10 weeks on a guided research project within a PD Project Team. The program is organized to ensure that interns gain valuable industry and functional experience, work on challenging assignments, learn about BMS and meet diverse company representatives.

Please Note: Iinterns that will be in-person and reside more than 50 miles away from the work location are eligible for a travel or housing stipend.

- Leveraging multiple analytical techniques for characterization of AAV before and after freeze-thaw cycles. Employing commercially available testing kit to characterize the impurities in the samples after freeze/thaw cycles.
- Exploring analytical and biophysical methods (DSF/DSC, spectroscopy, DLS, etc.) that have helped optimize protein formulations and adapt for AAVs.
- Optimizing formulations that can mitigate the negative impact of freeze/thaw on AAV particles.

- An introduction to the GPS and PD organizations
- Exposure to senior management and business leaders
- Formal presentation at the end of your internship
- Regular discussion of project progress with multiple mentors
- Formal review and feedback sessions

Requirements:
- Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited university program seeking a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related areas.
- Strong hands-on laboratory experience and knowledge in analytical techniques, nucleic acids and protein folding, including but not limited to, HPLC/UPLC, UV-Vis, Fluorescent assay, DLS, SEC-MALS, PCR. Working knowledge and experience in AAV, protein folding and thermodynamics a plus.
- Ability to solve problems independently with minimal supervision.
- Must have good oral/written communication and presentation skills and be able to work in a team environment.
- Must include GPA on resume for consideration (program requires GPA of 3.0 or greater) and a summary of their current research, not exceeding two pages, for consideration.
