Job description

Adventure ahead! We are looking for energetic, adventurous, hardworking people to join our team. Seafood processing is an incredible way to experience the beautiful landscape of Alaska, home to some of the world’s largest and most sustainable wild fisheries. This is a chance to work hard, save on expenses, meet a variety of people from around the world, and produce healthy protein for worldwide consumption.

Seafood processors perform a variety of manual labor tasks. Once the fishing fleet delivers seafood to our docks, our processing employees move the product through our production line until it is shipped in bulk to customers and cold storage facilities worldwide.

The work lasts from approximately mid/late - June to early/mid August. The season may be shorter or longer depending on the fishery.

Job duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • offloading product from vessels
  • sorting, butchering, cleaning, cutting, filleting, trimming, and boxing various seafood products
  • inspecting product
  • operating plant machinery, a forklift or pallet jack
  • preparing packaging materials
  • loading product, boxes, pallets, or carts of product into or out of freezers or refrigerated vans
  • guiding product into automated machinery
  • cleaning or sanitizing the work area

To preserve our food products at the peak of freshness, our plants operate 8am to Midnight. Employees may be asked to work up to 16 hrs per day, seven days a week. You are expected to work when there is fish on the premises. There are no scheduled days off. There may be several days or weeks of full production, and there may be several days with little or no production. There is no way to predict how much work will be available since this is a wild fishery, and it is important to understand that work hours are dependent on fish.

Lots of fish = Lots of work, No fish = No work

Wages and Benefits

$17.15 / regular hour; $25.73 / overtime hour – Payroll is processed Bi-Weekly

In Alaska, employees are paid overtime after eight regular hours in a day, and after 40 regular hours in a week.

NPSI provides transportation from the nearest major airport to the work location and back if you complete the season.

Employees live on site in communal bunkhouses with shared facilities, rooms are assigned based on gender identity, bed linens are provided. The cookhouse prepares hearty and nutritious meals and snacks. The housekeeping staff cleans and sanitizes restrooms and common areas. Laundry is the employees responsibility but we provide washers/dryers and detergent free of charge.

With no onsite expenses, and hopefully a large fish run, this is often a great way to make money in a relatively short period of time. There are additional opportunities for pay such as referral bonuses.

We offer opportunities to grow: Both professionally and personally! We offer the possibility to move up within our company.

NPSI offers a generous employer matching 401(k) retirement plan and you are eligible to participate on day one! We also offer affordable, traditional health insurance benefits that include medical, dental, vision and prescription coverage.

Qualified applicants must be:

  • 18+ years old.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Willing and able to do this work, with or without reasonable accommodation:

o Perform physical, standing work for up to 16 hours per day, seven days per week.

o Possess visual acuity and tactile dexterity to perform processing tasks.

o Process, touch, and be in close proximity of seafood products.

o Demonstrate prompt and reliable attendance.

o Work in cold, wet, loud plants with strong seafood odors.

o Live and work in remote areas with limited access to medical attention.

o Work safely around moving machinery, forklifts, vehicles, and elevated walkways.

o Follow verbal and/or written directions.

o Use hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders repetitively.

o Physically evacuate the area in a swift manner in case of an emergency.

o Safely lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Willing to live and work with a culturally diverse workforce, sharing bunkhouse rooms and communal restrooms.
  • Willing to follow all of the company’s policies including our Discrimination-Free and Harassment-Free Workplace policy.
  • Willing to follow our strict no drugs, no alcohol policy.

Important Considerations

This work can be hard, monotonous, and boring. GCI cell phone service is the only cell service provider that works in the Togiak area. Traditional Cell carriers that work in major cities in AK and the lower 48 (ATT, T-Mobile and Verizon etc. ) will not work once you leave Anchorage to fly to the plant. There are no land lines or pay phones at the plant. Employees can use an office cell phone to make short calls. GCI SIM cards and cell phones are sold at the office as well as GCI cell plans. We provide free, limited access to a desktop computer to check email. We also have limited WiFi connection. All processing gear (raingear, gloves, boots, etc.) is provided but we encourage you to bring a good waterproof processing boot (like X-Tuff brand) as sore feet is the number one complaint by processors.

Equal Employment Opportunity

It is the Company’s policy to comply with all federal, state, and local laws forbidding unlawful discrimination. Company does not and will not permit discrimination (including harassment) in recruitment, hiring, or employment based on race, color, creed, religion, disability, national origin, marital status, age, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, sexual orientation, honorably discharged veteran or military status, genetic information, opposition to a discriminatory practice, or any other status protected by local, state, or federal law. It is our policy to provide legal and fair treatment to all regarding recruitment, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, wages, hours, benefits, working conditions, training, and availability of advancement opportunities.

At-Will Employment
