Job description

The Role:
The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology team at Moderna is seeking a co-op in Computational Sciences to support our research and discovery efforts this summer/Fall. You will learn first-hand about mRNA therapeutics and gain valuable experiences of what it’s like to work as a computational scientist in the biotech industry. The Computational Science Co-op Program offers an exciting opportunity to understand the diverse applications of computational science at Moderna covering mRNA sequence design, systems biology, advanced statistics, bioinformatics and many more.
The Computational Science Co-op program is a 6-month experiential training program for students currently working towards a US- based undergraduate or advanced degree in STEM. Our spring co-op program will run from July 15 – December 13, 2024 . Co-ops must be available for the entire duration of the program. This position is mainly on-site at Cambridge MA, but we may make an exception under special circumstances to make it entirely remote.
Here's What You’ll Be Doing:
Contribute individually or as a team member with our multi-disciplinary teams in our departments (e.g., molecular biologists, immunologists, etc) to accomplish goals and objectives supporting Modern’s research and discovery efforts.
Learn first-hand Moderna’s process to mRNA therapeutic research and discovery through company-wide research seminars, departmental meetings and cross-functional team meetings.
Present your work to team members regularly during the program and at the end to the entire Moderna Research and Early Development organization.
Details About the Project:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Bioinformatics co-op with a focus on ribosome profiling analysis to join our cutting-edge research team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in processing ribosome profiling (Ribo-Seq) datasets and conducting in-depth analysis to elucidate the dynamics of mRNA translation.
Key Responsibilities:
Specialized Data Extraction: Retrieve, curate and benchmark high-quality ribosome profiling datasets from established public repositories, ensuring the data is suitable for comparative analysis of mRNA translation dynamics.
Translation Dynamics Analysis: Utilize bioinformatics tools to analyze Ribo-Seq data, focusing on understanding translation initiation, elongation, and termination and identify patterns and variations in mRNA translation.
Model development: Contribute to the development of predictive and generative models that predict mRNA translational efficiency.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
Self-motivated and ability to drive a project to completion.
Flexibility to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Collaborate with groups across the company in platform projects and multiple therapeutic areas to support research projects.
Review literature on NGS methods and applications, and present at internal journal-clubs/meetings.
Proficiency in working with bioinformatics databases, including but not limited to NCBI, Ensembl, and UCSC Genome Browser, and familiarity with the array of bioinformatics file formats such as FASTA, FASTQ, SAM/BAM and GFF/GTF.
In-depth scientific and technical knowledge of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) experiments, including the design, execution, and data analysis pipelines for NGS applications such as RNA-Seq, etc.
Demonstrated experience in developing and utilizing bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of NGS data, including quality control, alignment, quantification, and functional annotation.
Strong programming skills in Python or R for data analysis, including the ability to write clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
Ability to interpret and visualize complex genomic data sets to extract meaningful insights and communicate findings to a multidisciplinary team.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Experience working with ribosome profiling data analysis and an understanding of mRNA translation processes is a plus but not required.
Moderna is pleased to provide you with an innovative suite of benefits, including:
Free premium access to meditation and mindfulness classes
Free parking or subsidized commuter passes
Generous paid time off, including:
  • Vacation, sick time and holidays
  • Volunteer time to participate within your community
