Director, Email Acquisition and Marketing

Reports To: VP, Digital Audience

  • Location: New York City. This is a full-time Hybrid position (3 days in the office) offering a competitive salary, healthcare, and a benefits package.

Outside of being one of the most successful publishers at newsstand, our brands are rapidly growing across digital channels, reaching more than 42MM+ unique views each month and 27MM+ social media fans through high-quality content.

We are seeking a Director to lead Email Audience Acquisition and Marketing. This is an exciting opportunity to expand and drive our email program. You will be responsible for leading audience growth to cultivate relationships with our digital audiences. The ideal candidate has experience developing lifecycle marketing strategies to create touchpoints with readers at a major media brand or publisher. This role requires you to be an email subject matter expert with authority on best practices. You must have a keen understanding of audience intent and interest to create engaging campaigns. Our team embraces data-driven decision making and testing. This team will be focused on driving email clicks to a wide spectrum of content types. You should be someone who is excited about exploring user behaviors and engagement. This leader must be a savvy self-starter who loves building from the ground up, leverages data, and has excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities:

Newsletter Strategy

  • Define and execute a vision for a robust newsletter program, developing strong ideas for newsletters to drive audience engagement and website traffic.
  • Work with growth and editorial teams to launch, maintain and expand newsletters offerings.
  • Partner with product team to maximize newsletter promotion placements & on-site signups
  • Define, refine, and execute strategies for deepening relationships with newsletter subscribers
  • Responsible for overall health, development, maintenance, and reporting of email databases.
  • Own the lifecycle strategy specifically within automations, enhancing series-based emails (welcome series, shopping, topical series) and manage all campaigns throughout the customer lifecycle journey from activation to retention using behavioral triggers to ensure high customer engagement.
  • Develop strategies for new business initiatives including trigger marketing to drive engagement with online experiences such as polls, quizzes, and puzzles.
  • Continuously work to optimize audience acquisition and engagement for newsletter programs.
  • Monitor industry trends and lead experimentation. Prioritize and manage a testing roadmap to identify the most impactful tactics.

Manage Email Delivery and Execution

  • Manage the email deployment process and monitor for successful delivery.
  • Build email campaigns in preexisting templates including QA of email campaigns for clarity, grammar, link functionality, and inbox display.
  • Design and conduct A/B testing. Track effectiveness at driving results to increase open rates and clicks within newsletters.
  • Identify optimizations of newsletter templates to increase conversion and traffic

Oversee Newsletter Measurement and Performance

  • Regularly track and analyze newsletter metrics to understand audience behavior and performance. Translate insights to identify experiments and best practices.
  • Oversee regular analytics reporting to surface content performance and recommendations to editorial leadership.
  • Dive deep into user data and analyze subscriber behavior to create targeted strategies for each title to drive desired behavior through segmentation, personalization, identifying new touch points and further optimization of existing flows.
  • Oversee and manage reporting processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting on key performance metrics and communication of results and insights to leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years experience using CRM and email marketing tools (i.e., Sailthru).
  • Strong analytical and data-driven mindset with experience using analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Chartbeat and Looker.
  • Proven experience in segmentation and audience targeting, analyzing large sets of user data and the ability to turn findings into actionable insights.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams and manage multiple priorities.
  • Technically proficient (HTML) and able to use code to build newsletters within CRM tools.
  • Experience managing people and projects.
  • An entrepreneurial attitude and vision for what’s next in the audience space.
  • Ability to think creatively and solve problems.
