JOB TITLE: School Counselor

SUMMARY: Promote student success through the implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic, career, and social/emotional needs of students. To assist schools by providing educational interventions and progress monitoring for students. Support student success by providing a comprehensive (K-8) and developmentally-appropriate guidance program, including intervention, education and consultation with educators, students and families.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Counseling
  • School Counselor Certificate through the Arizona Department of Education
  • Experience in counseling youth
  • Able to analyze and interpret school-based data
  • Excellent written, oral and classroom presentation skills
  • Understanding of developmental stages of children

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience as a School Counselor implementing the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model
  • One to three years of experience as a counselor in a school setting
  • Three years of experience as a teacher or knowledge and implementation of classroom management skills and lesson delivery
  • Knowledge and/or experience with PBIS
  • Demonstrated experience as leader or member of leadership team
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and cultures

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Responsible for implementation of the district's comprehensive school counseling program.
  2. Deliver district social/emotional curriculum through the use of effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured classroom lessons and small group sessions.
  3. Sustain and support responsive services through the effective use of individual and small-group counseling, consultation and referral skills. Responsive services may include counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.
  4. Promote systems support through effective program management and support for other educational programs.
  5. Meet with the school administrator at the beginning of the school year to discuss the school counseling management system and program action plans using a yearly School Counselor/principal agreement.
  6. Use data as a guide when deciding counseling program direction and emphasis.
  7. Monitor students on a regular basis as they progress in school.
  8. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
  9. Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board policy or evaluation of professional personnel.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education materials and programs; ability to write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, students, administration, and the community.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
