Position Title:  Speech & Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)
                                                                       
Department:     Special Education                    
 
Supervisor:      Director, Special Education  
 
 Term of Employment:    9 months - position to end at the end of the 23/24 School Year   
 
Salary Classification:     Speech Salary Schedule         
 
Job Summary: The person in this position will primarily be responsible for assisting in preparing assessments for students with speech and hearing challenges. He/she will also make certain that all directives included in the students' Individual Education Plan (IEP) are carried out, so that the student can achieve their maximum educational potential.
 
Essential Functions:  Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include, but are not limited to, the following tasks, duties, knowledge, skills and other characteristics.  This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents in this class. 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES generally include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:
 
 
  • Conducts speech-language screenings of students. 
  • Implements and follows documented Individual Education Plans (IEPs). 
  • Schedules students for services based on the IEP. 
  • Documents student progress through daily logs and quarterly progress reports. 
  • Assists staff during standardized assessment. 
  • Participates in parent conferences/IEP meetings under the direction of the Speech/Language Pathologist
  • Prepares materials for teachers and students. 
  • Attends and participates in training workshops. 
  • Maintains accurate student records, and keeps information secure and confidential. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
 
 
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
 
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county and city statutes, rules, policies and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of applicable Peoria Unified School District and departmental policies and procedures. 
  • Ability to learn special methods and procedures specific to working with speech and language-impaired students. 
  • Ability to work independently with moderate supervision. 
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public and others having business with the school district. 
  • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  A Bachelor's degree in Speech and Language Disorders, or Communication Sciences OR any equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved AND a current SLPA license from the Arizona Department of Health Services.
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:    
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint and background clearance check.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Arizona driver's license.
  • May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • May be required to work outside normal working hours.
  • May be required to travel to perform work functions.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English language.
