General Purpose
The Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park is currently recruiting for the position of Zoo Education Curator. In the position you will performs a variety of general administrative duties related to planning, developing, managing, implementing and evaluating educational programs and activities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Executive Director of the Zoo.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Provides close supervision to adult and youth volunteers and seasonal employees in the education department.
Essential Functions
Plans, develops and implements educational programs, classes and activities for the general public. Recruits, trains, schedules and supervises volunteers, such as career exploration student volunteers for special events and activities. Evaluates effectiveness of educational programs and activities and maintains appropriate records and files etc.
Supervises and coordinates the education activities and programs of the Zoo Docents. Assists in recruiting and training Docents to conduct tours and lectures as appropriate for the general public, schools and other groups. Plans, coordinates and participates in, as appropriate, employee training programs, in-services seminars and workshops for other members of the zoo staff.
Submits educational department budget to Zoo Superintendent.
Maintains education center including supplies, library, animal enclosures, biofacts and displays. Participates in the educational labeling, signage and other interpretive displays in the zoo.
Develops and evaluates interactive zoo exhibits. Assists in the marketing and promotion of the zoo, including identifying revenue producing programs and activities. Schedules and oversees special events and activities for schools and for the public like the Water Conservation Week, Zoo Mobile and Earth day.
Submits articles for publication to in-house, zoological society and professional publications.
Assists with species selection for zoo and animal collections; assists with animal handling.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from college with a bachelor's degree in life sciences or appropriate education area.
AND
B. Two (2) years of experience performing above related duties;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of Zoo Education programs including volunteer adult and youth supervision/development, coordination of creative planning for programs/future exhibits; appropriate teaching methods, testing and evaluation of programs; fund raising in relation to educational programming.
Ability to follow both written and verbal instruction. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing to staff, volunteers and the general public. Ability to effectively teach a variety of subjects related to biology, zoology and other earth sciences. Ability to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Idaho driver's license.
Work Environment
Tasks require a variety of physical activities not generally involving muscular strain. Physical demands may occur in activities related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking, hearing and seeing required in the daily performance of job duties. Occasional exposure to environmental and work hazards resulting from working in a zoo environment. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.
