Description

Position Title:Commercial Driver, Zero Waste
Division: Social Enterprise
Department: Zero Waste
Reports to: Manager, Zero Waste Operations
FLSA Status: Full-time / Non-Exempt
Compensation: $30.00 to $35.00 per hour
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 5:30am-2:00pm; occasional weekends and evenings may be required
Location: This position is 100% in-person, located at 1560 Berger Dr. Some presence may be required at our other location at 2650 Senter Road.
Travel: Local travel may be required up to 90% of the time.

Position Summary:

The front-end loader driver will be responsible for collecting landfill, green waste and/or paper and cardboard from different routes on a daily basis. They will need to properly keep track of the material that is collected and be able to generate monthly reports on this material. The driver will be collecting material mainly from schools and then dumping it at a transfer station. Upon completion of the route, the driver is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the truck at all times. The driver will also be responsible for training corpsmembers on how to properly keep track of the data  and how to report on it.

 

Job Duties:

Driving & Routes

  • Drive and operate the Zero Waste commercial fleet, including front-end loader trucks;
  • Complete recycling routes daily, with the aim of achieving a 75% diversion rate for East Side Union HS District schools; 
  • Enter and maintain detailed records and documentation; 
  • Train corpsmembers on the Recycle iQ system; 
  • Oversee the maintenance of an assigned truck; 
  • Relay truck maintenance issues to management and assigned mechanic; 
  • Dispose of materials collected at recycling and transfer stations; 
  • Upholding USDOT Motor Carrier Program standards and requirements;  
  • Ability to assist in other Zero Waste operations as needed and requested by management;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Partnerships & External Relations

  • Builds and maintains relationships with staff at East Side Union HS District schools;  
  • Maintains relationships with staff at recycling and transfer stations;  
  • Serves as an effective ambassador, builds connections, and maintains relationships with outside constituents 

 

Leadership & Mentorship

  • As needed, supervise and lead the day-to-day engagement of corpsmembers in project work;
  • Facilitate intentional discussions and informal lessons to contribute to the corpsmembers’ personal growth
  • and group dynamics;
  • Promote individual corpsmember development and a healthy, supportive community;
  • Follow and enforce all SJCC+CS policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent the Corps.

 

Safety & Risk Management

  • Conduct safety tailgate meetings on a daily basis, and especially when working with corpsmembers;
  • Monitor and support the corpsmembers' physical and emotional safety during work hours, while implementing any work project;
  • Ensure corpsmembers are wearing proper uniforms and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
  • Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety;
  • Transport corpsmembers and equipment safely in SJCC vans or commercial vehicles;
  • Follow SJCC+CS COVID-19 Mitigation protocol and ensure corpsmembers do the same;
  • Conduct daily inspections, cleanouts, and maintenance of vehicles;
  • Regularly review the Corpsmember Handbook and maintain familiarity with all policies;
  • Report incidents to management immediately and appropriately.

 

Administration & Team Communication

  • Participate in biweekly Zero Waste unit meetings and other convening’s as requested, coming prepared to report on key updates and personal progress;
  • As required by daily projects, complete attendance tracking, daily and weekly reports, corpsmember evaluations, disciplinary action forms, incident reports, etc., and submit in a timely and highly detailed manner;
  • Track all project related outcomes and deliverables, such as collection weights and quantities;
  • Use Recycle iQ and Corps iQ to track team progress and key project data;
  • Contribute to an organized and high-performing workplace.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary: $30.00 to $35.00 per hour. Placement on the compensation scale is determined using a number of factors, including the candidate’s level of experience and education that either meets or significantly exceeds the minimum requirements.

Work Environment & Requirements

Position requires sitting, standing, balancing or walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. In the course of work the incumbent may be exposed to biologic/infectious agents, unpleasant odors, fumes, smoke, dust and air contaminants, and insects. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work near moving equipment, vehicles or machinery, work on ladders or scaffolding or at heights. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing, equipment, or devices, and may work near hostile or offensive individuals. May be exposed to biohazards and/or hazardous chemicals. The nature of the work requires that the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment and drive motorized vehicles, commonly subjecting the incumbent to vibration. Employment At-Will

The San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School is an “At-Will” employer. This means that employment with SJCC+CS is voluntarily entered into and staff members are free to resign at any time.  Similarly, SJCC+CS may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or prior notice, as it deems appropriate.   This at-will employment relationship can be changed only in a written agreement signed by the staff member and the Executive Director of SJCC+CS.

 

**SJCC+CS IS A MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION EMPLOYER**

All new hires will be required to provide proof of vaccination absent an approved medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. If a new hire is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to a future date after they have been vaccinated.  Fully vaccinated means at it has been at least two weeks since the person has completed the entire recommended initial series of a COVID-19 vaccine.
