Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB), officially launched in June of 2015, is a community-built youth development and community empowerment organization that leverages the iconic game of basketball to help today’s urban youth overcome the most urgent and systemic issues facing underserved communities. A diverse and impassioned group of individuals, including leaders from the grass-roots to the tree-tops, have been working diligently to execute upon this mission by building an impactful program, a robust and sustainable organization, and ultimately our world-class ‘Sixth Man’ Center to help uplift thousands of children, youth, and families for generations to come.
- Primary Scope of Duties
Reporting to the Director of Older Youth Program, PYB is seeking a dedicated driver to safely transport youth to the I Am Because We Are (IABWA) program by picking them up from their homes and dropping them off to the program site and then returning them to their homes at the conclusion of the day's program. This position will also support the youth as an assistant coach-mentor. The primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Driver:
- Drive a van to pick up and deliver youth to the I Am Because We Are (IABWA) program and deliver them home after the program day
- Ensure youth are properly secured in their seats with a seatbelt by physically checking that the buckles are secure
- Remain attentive to traffic and weather conditions and ensuring passenger safety
- Use Global Positioning System (GPS) for accurate directions and to avoid potential hazard areas
- Follow the planned route and schedule for departure times, stops, and delivery of IABWA youth
- Complete a daily maintenance record at the beginning and end of each shift
- Conduct daily inspection of vehicles prior to operation inclusive of tires, brakes, turn signals, windows, windshield wipers, windshield fluid, and oil, etc.
- Monitor and log fuel consumption, mileage, and passenger numbers
- Report delays, accidents and emergencies
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations
- Report any and all incidents occurring during transportation of youth
- Ensure current vehicle registration and insurance cards are in the vehicle's glove compartment at all times
- Assist with the loading and unloading of the van when required
- Complete paperwork as required
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and crisis intervention using agency-trained protocols
- Maintain a clean vehicle
Assistant Coach Mentor:
- Assists program team lead(s) and manager with various aspects of diversion program for older youth adjudicated and/or diverted from juvenile justice system
- Execute day-to-day programmatic objectives and goals
- Function as a proactive and positive team leader with in an Evidenced Based Program
- Assist with the facilitation of academic modules and critical thinking conversations amongst program participants
- Provide coaching and mentoring to a team of 8-10 program participants through a variety of basketball skill-building exercises
- Building individualized development plans with each program participant
- Developing rapport and relationship with program participants through weekly check-ins
- Actively communicating with project team lead(s), director, and other stakeholders
- Perform other duties as assigned
III. Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- Must have current, valid driver's license in state of residence, 10 years of driving experience in the United States, and acceptable driving record
- Demonstrated proficiency in managing route efficiency and ability to safely operate company vehicles, specifically a passenger van
- Ability to utilize Global Positioning System (GPS) for accurate directions and to avoid potential hazard areas
- Ability to follow the planned route and schedule for departure times, stops and delivery of IABWA youth
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage and prioritize multiple, often competing, priorities
- Demonstrated strong attention to detail
- Demonstrated strong time management and organizational skills
- Demonstrated excellent judgment with the ability to solve problems and make decisions with input from supervisor
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate future needed changes or identify problem areas and take effective actions
- Must possess excellent customer interaction, collaboration, and written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated basic experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Experience working with children and families preferred
