JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Director of Public Services, the Youth Services Supervisor is responsible for reference and reader’s advisory for the youth area, story hours, children’s and teen programs, and customer service to youth and their caregivers. This position promotes library services within local schools and works on projects as assigned to promote an interactive, creative educational experiences and performs related duties. Supervises the Youth Services staff.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs excellent internal and external customer service and library service in responseto the information needs of library users and the overall community with an emphasis onyouth (ages birth to 18).
  • Promotes library collections and services to the public, both inside and outside thephysical building.
  • Plans, designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates library programs for youth, parents andadults who work with children.
  • Assists customers with the use of print and electronic resources.
  • Recommends and refers patrons and parents to alternative sources of information(internal and external).
  • Creates and arranges displays of books and other library materials to enhance the libraryexperience and to promote the use of library resources.
  • Assists in maintaining a pleasant,inviting, and safe environment for youth.
  • Works independently to analyze and evaluate current services, programs, and practices;revises and develops programs as needed to respond to patron needs and servicedelivery.
  • Performs reader’s advisory service for youth and families. Assists in use of the library andits resources. Assists youth, parents and other adults in selection of appropriate material.
  • In coordination with Outreach, may provide outreach to youth by visiting local childcarefacilities, schools, and other facilities to promote library services or programs.
  • With guidance from the Director of Central Library Services or Community LibraryManager, provides response(s) to requests and conflict resolution upon receivingcomplaints and/or special requests from patrons.
  • Assists with applying for and utilizing grant money for Youth Services, as approved.
  • Plans and/or prepares displays, bibliographies, pathfinders, and other informationalmaterials.
  • Participates in staff development and training.
  • Oversees Youth Services staff.
  • Analyzes library collection and assists in its development, maintenance, and preservation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Requires a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or related field; two (2) years of library or related experience (e.g., teaching, recreation, social work, book sales, etc.); or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Additional Requirements:

  • Experience with the PINES system is a plus.
  • Must have previous supervisory and/or experience leading a small group of personnel.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license and insurability required.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends and various locations.

  • Knowledge of reference sources and research techniques, reader interest level; methods of library supply resources, principles and methods of Library Services automated systems.

  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to work with youth of varied backgrounds, ages and abilities.
  • Ability to maintain a calm atmosphere, assures safety, and responds to emergencies.
  • Ability to deal with associates and the public in a courteous manner, ability tocommunicate well with individuals; neat personal appearance; emotionally stable;pleasing manner.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and a variety of audio-visual equipment.
  • Computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office and experience using computersoftware to create flyers and brochures. Prior experience with G-Suite a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is typically performed with the employee sitting at a desk, standing for extending periods, or bending/stooping. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds routinely, climb stairs, stand for extended periods of time, extended walking within and outside branch locations, reach, bend, and stoop. Full range of hand and finger motion is required for data entry purposes. The ability to distinguish color is required for network wiring purposes. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

 

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. Must have the ability to place records, files, and boxes weighing no more than 25 pounds on shelves about head level.
  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Hearing 2: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound. Must have the ability to hear well enough to carry on a normal conversation with clients both in person and on the telephone.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Visual Acuity 1: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading. Must have the ability to see well enough to interpret data on a computer monitor.
  • Visual Acuity 2: Including color, depth perception, and field vision.
  • Visual Acuity 3: Visual Acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Visual Acuity 4: Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
  • Visual Acuity 5: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines; using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Typical office/library environment. Some fluctuations in building temperature related to HVAC problems can cause uncomfortable periods of heat or cold. Some periods of elevated noise levels. Some stress related to the type of work being performed may be encountered e.g., pressure related to periods of high-volume activity and multiple demands.

 

The work week is a 40-hour work week. After Hours and holiday availability, while rare, is required. This is a salaried exempt position.
