Description
This position will be located at the new Ashley River location.
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the class is to perform routine library functions and general clerical work in assigned service. Provides assistance to patrons with locating and checking out materials, shelving library materials and other clerical duties as assigned; and to provide professional and courteous customer service at all times. Provides assistance to the Youth Services Librarian. The class is given a general outline of work to be performed and is free to develop work methods and sequences; work is reviewed periodically by supervisor.
Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Assists with the unpacking and inspection of newly received orders.
• Performs final processing and preparation of new library materials, including applying property stamp, attaching book jackets, inserting security tags, and sorting items for distribution to proper library facility.
• Assists in planning and presenting age and developmentally appropriate programs and activities for children and/or adults which encourage lifetime reading and use of libraries.
• Assists with program registration processes.
• Prepares support materials for programs, including craft materials, name tags, puppets, audiovisual materials, booklists, etc.
• Provides basic reference and reader advisory services to children, parents and other adults working with children, referring patrons to Librarian as needed.
• Assists in providing outreach programming throughout the library system and community.
• Assists with collection management duties; including processing leased materials, donations, paperbacks and audio-visual materials.
• Maintains records of purchase orders for new materials.
• Retrieves deposited materials from book return.
• Checks books in and out; registers patrons for library cards; places holds on books as requested; processes inter-library loan requests; inspects returned materials for damage; verifies due date; computes and receives fines.
• Keeps supervisor informed of all issues and concerns encountered.
• Maintains accurate and up-to-date records, and prepares a variety of routine reports as required.
• Prepares library for opening and closing.
• Assists in training new or volunteer staff assigned; assists in supervising volunteers as needed.
• Receives and responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints in areas of responsibility.
• Sorts incoming library materials according to classification; reshelves, refiles or returns items to designated areas.
• Performs routine maintenance of materials and ensures appropriate space is available for new selections.
• Routes materials with improper or missing labels to technical services staff for repair.
• Receives and processes periodicals and newspapers.
• Performs routine inspections to ensure previously shelved selections are in correct order.
• Assists the public in the use of technology, including software, online tools, and mobile devices.
• Provides pro-active customer service in assisting patrons in all areas of the library.
• Performs general administrative/clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, entering, and retrieving computer data, copying, and filing document, answering the telephone, etc.
• Attends trainings, meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., as necessary to maintain job knowledge and skills.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Associate's degree preferred.
Minimum one (1) year of library experience required.

Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of and understanding of operating policies and procedures and how to apply these to complex problems; or the coordination of sub professional work in these disciplines.
• Skill in operating or repairing complex machinery, equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as the application of custom or commercial financial, accounting, administrative, or other complex software or systems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
• Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
• Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
• Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
• Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
• Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
• Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
• Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
• Handling: Picking, holding or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
• Hearing 1: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
• Hearing 2: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
• Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
• Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

• Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

• Talking 2: Shouting in order to be heard above ambient noise level.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position; typical Library hours and days of operation are Monday through Thursday 8:00am - 7:00pm and Friday through Sunday 8:00am - 5:00pm with normal working hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm. Employees must work 40 hours weekly to maintain their full-time status. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays during emergencies or as requested. Positions may require travel throughout the County and between library branches as needed.
