Position Summary:
Service Description:
- Provide Peer services to Sagamore Children's Psychiatric Center (SCPC) patients and their families. Services will be rendered in the SCPC inpatient hospital at 197 Half Hollow Road, Dix Hills, NY 11746.
- Collaborates with SCPC program staff to help ensure the patient's services and educational needs are met. This includes but is not limited to:
- Individualized intense outreach to help patients become engaged in service planning activities.
- Help patients identify and communicate needs.
- Educating patients about the service planning process and helping them develop the skills necessary to be active participants in their service plans and discharge plan.
- Empowering patients by helping them to develop an affective way to have a voice in their own recovery and teaching self-advocacy skills.
- Provide support and understanding from someone who was in their situation and understands firsthand their experiences.
- Develop, coordinate, and facilitate support groups as needed, including co-facilitating newly developed Youth Advisory Council and Super Skills Group.
- Connect to and encourage participation in groups, resources and services in their home community as available and appropriate.
- Treatment Team member.
- Share their own experience and positive outcome to offer hope that things can and will get better.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adherence to HIPAA.
- Complete required documentation in a timely manner consistent with SCPC guidelines.
- Patients will be under the supervision / observation of SCPC staff while Peer services are provided.
- Peer services will be provided in accordance with all State, Federal, Joint Commission, Local, Occupational Health and Safety rules/regulations, and Facility rules and regulations (i.e., code of ethics, security policy, smoking policy, etc.).
- SCPC does not guarantee minimum quantity or types of services to be provided.
Service Schedule:
Services will be 40 hours per week. Weekly schedule will be developed by Sagamore Children's PC and
the agency.
Preferred Experience:
- Be relatable to our patients as it helps to establish relationships/bonds.
- Be able to relate to patients who have been through mental health treatment/services
- Have lived experience in the children's mental health system and/or other child serving system and be willing to share their experiences with others.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Excellent communications skills including writing, speaking, and listening.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Orientation and Training:
SCPC will provide an orientation to Peers which will include a general facility orientation, fire safety, infection prevention/control and training in the requirements of the privacy and security provisions of
HIPAA and the New York State Mental Hygiene Law. Confidentiality Peers shall respect the confidential nature of all information that they have access to, including but not
limited to patient's protected health information. Peers are responsible for complying with New York State law and Facility's policies and procedures
relative to confidentiality. Cameras are not permitted to be used on SCPC grounds. Under no circumstances shall Peers take any
photographs of patients.
