In compliance with TLW Transformation Center standards, state licensing requirements, and other federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, the Direct Care Specialist is accountable for monitoring residents and maintaining a secure, supportive, structured, and therapeutic environment that fits the residents' individual care plans and personal development needs. The Direct Care Specialist is in charge of managing daily activities, providing supervision, and having knowledge of the structure and routine of the residential program. Working closely with the youth to make sure that their basic needs are met in a satisfactory manner.
Responsibilities
- Know and enforce program policies and procedures, including ensuring compliance with TDFPS Minimum Standards for General Residential Operations and for the specific program.
- Identify and put into practice program services that support positive youth development and represent a trauma informed care approach.
- Speak with resident to encourage good conduct, foster social engagement, and advance community inclusion.
- Ensure that the residents' emotional, physical, and developmental needs are being met.
- Monitor residents' day-to-day actions, including interactions with others, the completion of chores, participation in group activities, completion of individual assignments, and conduct at school (or at work, as appropriate).
- Directly supervise and observe every resident while they are in their rooms or communal spaces; be aware of everyone's whereabouts at all times throughout the shift.
- Interact with, observe, and manage residents in accordance with their individualized treatment and behavior support plans.
- Keeps age-appropriate standards in place and upholds the behavioral management system, including ensuring that residents act appropriately when participating in work, play, and school.
- Completes all shift-related documentation, including but not limited to residential case notes, incident reports, and resident inventories; other paperwork, like sleep logs and behavior checklists, may be required by clinical or medical staff.
- Ensure that residents have access to both structured and unstructured activities as well as educational opportunities.
- Assist residents in developing independent living skills, such as developing self-care abilities, healthy leisure time activities, and other fundamental techniques as identified by the Casey life skills assessment.
- Flexibility to cover all shifts as required or delegated by the program's licensed childcare administrator or the program's supervisor.
- Carry out the regular cleaning, laundry, and maintenance tasks assigned by the supervisor (including regular weekly/monthly tasks) to make sure the shelter complies with all health and licensing requirements.
- Model appropriate behavior and social skills at all times.
- Assist residents with crisis intervention.
- Engage in good interactions with the staff and residents at all times, fostering a safe and supportive environment.
- As directed by the supervisor, attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and training sessions, and offer suggestions for improving the program's quality.
- Monitor and promptly resolve or report per policy issues that affect the health or safety of youth, staff, or the facility.
- Accompanies residents to groups, interviews, meetings, mealtime, recreation, educational activities, and medical appointments; also takes part in supervision and instruction.
- Ensure that program operations, goals, and objectives are met, and that the residents are receiving the greatest standard of care by working closely with administration, the program, and clinical staff.
- Act professionally, with a positive attitude, and in accordance with Agency policies and procedures when interacting with internal and external clients.
- Maintains professional boundaries between self and residents to ensure appropriateness in the working relationship.
- Shares all pertinent information both internally and externally to facilitate the resident's care.
- Conduct periodic reviews of client files to familiarize themselves with the unique, specialized requirements and objectives of the residents under their supervision.
- Other tasks are carried out by Direct Care Staff as directed by the management team.
Required skills and qualifications
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse staff and resident population
- Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Social Services, Human Services,
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent Must be 21 years of age or older with experience
- Prior full-time working experience in residential care facility in Direct Care, eldercare, group home, or working with individuals with mental health and/or behavioral health settings
- Related Knowledge of behavior modification and therapeutic settings
- Ability to provide conflict resolution and de-escalation methods and techniques to ensure the well-being and safety of residents
- Working knowledge of licensing standards and contract guidelines applicable to program.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers and professionals.
