Program Description
The Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) is an after-school educational enrichment program for students in grades 1st-12th who live in six low- and mixed-income housing communities in Seattle. Begun in 1991 as a partnership with the Seattle Housing Authority, the tutoring centers provide youth with a positive learning environment and a structured tutoring program to help them build academic success. The youth YTP serves are nearly all people of color, primarily from immigrant and refugee households. We work within the communities we serve, offering tutoring through trained volunteers, and connecting with schools and parents. YTP's five current locations are Jackson Park, Yesler Terrace, High Point, Rainier Vista, and New Holly
YTP is currently hiring a Youth Development Coordinator. These positions will be assigned to the Jackson Park (Lake City) site. This is an in-person position.
Our ideal candidate has experience working with youth in an academic setting and desires to support teens who have experienced significant educational opportunity gaps. The Youth Development Coordinator will support the development and implementation of programming for middle and high school youth. Primary duties will include leading enrichment activities that incorporate social emotional learning and youth leadership, and tutoring and mentoring students, Typical hours will be 20 per week, depending on whether or not tutoring is in session. This person must be available during program time, typically 4-8 pm M-Th during the school year and 1-5pm during the summer, with some earlier daytime hours possible.
Position Hours: Variable. Must be available on site Monday - Thursday 4pm - 8pm during the school year, and 1 - 5pm during the summer.
Responsibilities
  • With support of the Center Supervisor, plan and coordinate group activities for middle and high school youth.
    • Develop and plan teen groups, enrichment activities, and special events that respond to the needs of students in grades 6 - 12 and utilize Youth Development best practices.
    • Coordinate groups and events including logistics, setup and cleanup
    • Network and collaborate with partners to provide additional resources and activities for teens. Supervise all activities.
    • Train, support and supervise volunteers for group activities.
    • Promote events and recruit teen participants.
  • Support teen YTP participants individually, responding to their goals
    • Be onsite and available to assist with 1:1 or small group tutoring Monday- Thursdays during tutoring hours; primarily supporting the middle school and high school scholars.
    • Monitor the implementation of learning goals and activities for our teen scholars; completing and/or reviewing goal logs as necessary.
    • Lead the teen interns and teen volunteers in their roles at the tutoring center, including assistance with their onboarding, training, as well as providing ongoing mentorship and guidance for the teens as leaders in the space.
    • Provide mentorship as older students make post-secondary education plans.
    • Network with parents and teachers to provide coordinated services.
  • Foster an environment where youth and adults are treated with respect and where learning is perceived to be fun, exciting and important. Assist in developing and supporting values of a culturally diverse work environment, including the tasks below.
    • Model respectful and inclusive behavior for staff, volunteers, students and parents.
    • Attend trainings as available to learn about students' cultures, anti-racism, and educational skills and strategies.
    • Assist with relationship building between tutors and students, by supporting them to learn about their student's culture, academic goals and challenges, and best ways to support their learning.
    • Use problem-solving skills. Perform appropriate classroom management during tutoring and enrichment sessions, and utilize conflict resolutions skills with students, parents, tutors, and teachers when needed.
  • Assist with general tutoring center operations
    • Collect and organize enrollment paperwork for new teen participants.
    • Assist with record keeping including attendance and enrollment tracking.
    • Assist with center organization including maintaining learning resources in an organized and accessible manner, and tracking student academic progress.
    • Assist with program setup and cleanup.
    • Mentor and supervise volunteers as needed.
  • Attend training workshops and staff meetings as needed. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications
  • Reliable transportation for on-time attendance of daily tutoring sessions and off-site meetings.
  • At least 1 year of relevant classroom or after-school experience in teaching, tutoring, or mentoring middle or high school youth.
  • Understanding of effective Youth Development programming and skills for working with teens.
  • Two years of post-secondary education in a related field; additional relevant experience may substitute for education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with youth in a respectful and caring manner, focusing on increasing self-esteem, leadership, and academic skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize programs or events.
  • Able to work individually and as a team, including effective communication and time management.
  • Cultural competence in working with low-income youth and families from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Academic competence in reading, writing and math.
  • Strong classroom management, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with schools, students, parents, community representatives and general public.
  • Computer skills including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Evening availability until 8pm Monday - Thursday.
  • Criminal history background checks are required prior to employment.
  • CPR and First Aid training within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in an East African language.
  • Experience working with immigrant youth and families.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Experience with college navigation for high school students.
